I can see two strands of opposition there. First, the usual cranks who hate surveillance, or anyone telling them what to do (telling other people what to do, however...). Second though are the people who really like living in suburbs. Really like living in them. Don't want anything intruding on mile after mile of lawns. No shops because the kids will hang out there. No schools because the kids will run riot and their mums will park there. No leisure facilities because the kids will use them. No doctor's because...you get the general idea. An Englishman's home is his castle, and his lawn is all he needs. That and space for his car whenever he needs to travel. After all, public transport is for the lower orders.
So in summary, cranks and snobs.
