Abernathy wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2025 8:52 pm There still seems to be some considerable ambiguity in media circles about the pronunciation of Kemi’s surname. Speaking as a Scot, to me it is indisputably “Badenoch”, rhyming with “Sad wee Enoch”. There is a whole region of Scotland so named (Badenoch & Strathspey, doncha know.)

I think there is a record of Kemi belligerently correcting some journalist and insisting that her name is pronounced “Baydenoch”, but it seems unconvincing to me.

Frankly, she might as well be Kemi Cuntflap.
That'll be like Kapoor "pronounced Cooper".

Built with a diagram 108 boiler which had a long combustion chamber. I think that Kemi of Badenoch has a short combustion chamber given how she has managed since becoming leader. Sadly the P2s were rebuilt by Thompson after Gresley’s death and were not a roaring success as A2/2s.

Kemi's backed the appalling Jenrick shit. That'll get all the Cameron young professionals back.

If they were truly concerned about alien cultures, they'd refuse much of their funding.

It's time we made fascists afraid to be fascists.

Badenoch did it in the most obnoxious way possible too. As a reply on Twitter to a post quoting a black Tory (former advisor to Johnson, Samuel Kasumu), who said the remarks were appalling, not that they were "divisive".

JWexSpa (very good ex Labour spad on Bluesky) pointed out that Badenoch got shirty before about people regarding her as having Nigerian heritage. I'm not like those Nigerians in the north, where Boko Haram comes from. But apparently it's ok to lump people with Pakistani heritage (like Sajid Javid and Nusrat Ghani, or at least their parents) with a tiny minority of sex offenders.

It's Starmer who's doing the smearing, apparently.

Kemi's been in the Cabinet with 2 of the Prime Ministers who didn't hold the inquiry she wanted, and was a junior minister for a third one, and a loyal backbencher to the fourth.

Interesting reading on wiki.

Never her fault, is it? That's kind of how further education colleges work, Kemi. It's down to you to put the effort in. If you can't be arsed, that's down to you.

Supporting the Tories because "let down" by John Major's Education system is quite the take though.
Badenoch studied A Levels in biology, chemistry and maths,[23] from Phoenix College, a further education college in Morden, South London. She achieved a B in Biology, a B in Chemistry and a D in Maths,[24] claiming that "no one at the school had pushed [her] to fulfil [her] potential" despite being a "straight A student" while in Nigeria and that being let down by the British education system pushed her to become a Conservative.[25] She consequently missed out on her place at Warwick University.

That's a cult Corbyn definition of a 'smear' after Jez was accused of something that was true.

Seems like an odd argument for her to start given Starmer was the DPP and in opposition while her party were in Government (and not holding this inquiry she says is so necessary).

I know that they're after Kipper voters, but the problem with the problem May had in 2017. You boost the other side. May could have done even worse if Tim Farron and Nicola Sturgeon hadn't made political misjudgments in the run up to the election. (Farron by musing on the sinfulness of gay sex, Sturgeon by invoking independence too quickly). If I'm in a seat where the Badenoch or Farage might beat the Labour candidate. this stuff makes me more likely to vote Labour.

Hilariously Kemi said there shouldn't be too many lawyers involved with the inquiry.

Luckily, child sexual abuse is the sort of subject where people shrug their shoulders and think "Shucks, if I'm criticised, I'll just roll with it, who needs professional advice?"

A few of Kemi's ex-colleagues (if not Kemi herself) would presumably get called in and asked some awkward questions. Famously these are people who don't mind criticism.

I have known many students who were 'straight As in Nigeria*' and somehow couldn't manage a D in the UK...

What's she even referring to? GCSE results, or something else?

Nobody at my middling comp pushed me to fulfil my potential either, Kemi, and so I realised the possible scope of my potential, and the concomitant need to work harder to reach it, much later than woud have been desirable.

But I'm not a Tory, so I don't entirely blame my overstuffed, under-resourced school for my own ultimate failings, apparently.

I'm older than Kemi (and pre-league tables) but what she complains about wasn't uncommon in my private school. At least 2 of my A level teachers took the attitude that it wasn't their job to push people who couldn't be bothered. The difference is that those kids would hold their hands up to the fact they didn't do enough work, and aren't still blaming the teachers for it.

Fuck knows.

I have some knowledge of the Nigerian middle classes, it will be complete bollocks of some sort.

"Your child is brilliant" isn't unknown in private schools outside Nigeria, in fairness.
