The animals all have paperwork confirming they're all fit and healthy and no risk of any Old Yeller or Cujo type shenanigans, and our Prime Minister yesterday gave his word that they'd get out, so of course its collapsed.

Deadbeat dad promising his kids that he won’t let their hamster die, for a quiet life.

People are raging on Twitter as you'd expect. However, and this may be me being overly cynical due to sleep deprivation (See posts passim), but there's this nagging doubt in my mind that wonders if some people would be so vociferous if you took the animals out of the equation, and he was just trying to get his Afghan staff out.

And I hate myself for thinking that.
You're not wrong. By coincidence, we watched an old Dara O'Briain stand up video last night in which he performs a straw poll of his audience which indicates that more people think kittens and puppies are cute than human babies (he apparently did this ever night of his tour and the answer was always the same). As he says, there has to be something really fucked up on an evolutionary level that we find the young of other species more appealing than our own.

There has to be something really fucked up on an intelligence level that I typed all that prior to checking to see if there was a You Tube clip:

You're not wrong, though. That is undoubtedly true. There are some very odd people (invariably female, I have to note) in the UK who get passionately vociferous and even militant where your dumb animals are concerned. I've always found it very, very strange.
And some of the more pro-animal rights ones are very often against human rights. Well, rights for one particular type of human.

Odd that human babies fail the cuteness test but people have just as strong reactions about abusing children as they do animals. Its humanity at its worse, the rape of innocence. Even if you're more likely to pull a gangster out of a fire than a cat you may still be more appalled at the death of a tortured cat than a criminal who's been shot for business reasons they chose to engage in.
Also dogs and humans secrete oxytocin when they bond. The love from dogs is not just learned performative behaviour to gain extra treats, good at that though they are.

Certainly I've encountered people (mostly BTL) who would delight in humanity being wiped from the face of the Earth so the animals could be left alone, free from humans abusing them.

These people are rarely at all practical.
I recall a couple of documentaries about "What happens is all the humans disappear".
The return to nature is an unpleasant apocalypse of the "Fur babies" who either starve trapped in the owner's homes,, are cannibalized by larger pets gone feral, or make attractive targets for the carnivores that move into the deserted cities.

It's pretty shit for dairy cows that don't get milked, or sheep that don't get shorn too.

Something I've never got an answer to from more radical vegans - "what do we do with all the domestic farm animals if everyone goes vegan?"
Either kill them and don't eat them.
Or turn all the livestock farms into Sanctuaries until the generation dies off.
Or release the wolves.

There has to be something really fucked up on an intelligence level that I typed all that prior to checking to see if there was a You Tube clip:
Theory: Small cats and dogs don't wake you up six times a night.

You've only got to see when some deranged hound has savaged a poor six month old child to death that a lot of comments are more concerned about the animal rather than the small human it's just killed.

Anyhow, back to Afghanistan, and apparently Farthing and his retinue can't get into the airport, with the Taliban not letting them in on one side, and the British and US forces not helping on the other - although to be fair they do have one or two other things to be getting on with - but obviously it's not much fun for those waiting - especially the animals that are crated up in searing heat.

There's massive rage on Twitter about this, and it's worth noting that the fall of Johnson won't be due to the corruption, Brexit or Covid, it'll be down to whether we end up with pictures of dozens of cats and dogs being put to sleep.

My oh my, I did greet with a degree of scepticism this morning's suggestions the baddies were planning a hit on Kabul airport. Now there are north of seventy dead and, as an aside, there are a few cynics on Twitter being called out. "Who the hell thinks like that?" is the general gist of it.

I'm Spartacus and I have little or no faith in that which comes out of the mouths of politicians, especially when their murderous indifference will lead to stranded personnel and their helpers being thrown to the wolves as of next Wednesday.

It’s definitely the “fur babies” thing. Just fucking weird.

Just catching up on the antics of Pen Farthing (an army nickname if ever I heard one). He's like the Ernest Shackleton of PR. He's got a plan to get his crew out against the odds and it involves embarassing a needy populist PM and his equally frivilous, animal loving wife. Getting on the wrong side of a kitten saving action-man is not a political hill worth dying on. Has somoene already referenced Jim Hacker and Benjy?

'I go when my crew goes, says ex-marine,' would have reached the news cycle but would that have raised the money for the plane? Probably not, bring on the puppies. I'd want him to have my back in a tight corner. Hope he does the media rounds as a poignant juxtaposition to Johnson.

And act horrified when their 'fur baby' breaks Peter Rabbit's neck in under 10 seconds. 'Gone over the rainbow bridge' is a popular expression for that sad time when the dog dies. I'm not seven, I understand death.

Case in point, a few years ago, one of the chickens a friend of mine kept met a rotten end by a neighbours dog.

Fortunately, her daughter, three at the time didn't see any of this, but the problem came how to broach the subject with her. Next time I went round there I asked this.

"Well," explained my friend, "We had to keep it a bit vague to be honest. Dolly learnt to fly and had gone away into our memories, isn't that right, Florence?"

"Nah", said three year old Florence, not looking up from her colouring book, "She's dead."
