Bad Enoch seems to have won quite easily in the end.

Either candidate as leader isn't great news for the Conservative Party, but Jenprick might have been slightly preferable as he wanted to take the Tories off to the extreme right of politics, leaving a vast area of centre ground for Starmer and the Labour Party to occupy, and govern in, in perpetuity.

There may yet be a split under the notoriously snippy Bad Enoch.

The numbers look fairly dire for the Tories Bad Enoch got just short of 54,000 votes where as Rishi got 60,000 votes when coming second to Truss. So it looks like 40,000 members didn't bother voting at all so it is hardly a ringing endorsement for Bad Enoch. She seems to have the backing of about a third of the parties MPs and about 40 % of party members.

The second BAME and fourth female to be elected leader of the Conservatives. Unlike Labour, who have NEVER elected either a BAME or female. She should play this to her advantage to convince such voters that Starmer isn't on their side. My prediction: Conservatives to be back in office at the next election.

Rishi wasn't elected by the grassroots of the party. May was given a free run at the leadership when Andrea Leadsom dropped out before the party members could vote. Bad Enoch won because her opponent was bloody awful. There is nothing very progressive about how the Tories elect their leaders.

There will be another leadership election within two years when the party lurches to the right to challenge Farage.

Voter : “That Labour has got a white bloke as their leader, so that’s not for me. I’m voting for the Tories. They’ve got that nasty black woman - that’ll do for me. What do you mean they trashed the country for fourteen years ?”

Aye, right.

Don't knock it. Badenoch is nasty, but she has her supporters. Starmer is currently struggling with most demographics.

Badenoch’s supporters are for the most part already all members of the Conservative Party. Ordinary “Joe Public” swing voters aren’t going to be persuaded away from Labour to vote Tory solely because their figurehead is a black woman.

2 things:
1. The people who would actually be impressed by - and more likely to vote for - a black and/or female leader are progressives. The people who would be very, very happy with a middle-aged white guy are conservatives. So for that to be an advantage Badenoch is in entirely the wrong party. They, like Sunak and Braverman, are more likely to be seen as useful cover for bigoted shithousery but otherwise expendable than anything else.
(And to head off the response that she beat a middle-aged white guy - it’s because she’s a bigger horrific arsehole, and that has direct appeal to Tories short-term plus plays into that whole useful cover thing. Can’t be racist and sexist with a black woman leader!)
2. Regardless of all the above, she is absolutely terrible - arrogant, ill informed, rude, a bully, a liar, gaffe prone, charmless, grudge-holding. The list is remarkably long, even for a Tory.

My prediction: Badenoch will not be leading the Tories at the next election, and they will not win it anyway because under her leadership they will now need even longer to rehabilitate themselves, if they even can. There is nothing to suggest any hidden depths or talent or appeal lurking in the least popular and least well supported conservative leader that could help her turn things around, especially in 3 or 4 years time when improvements made by multiple Labour budgets and decent management of the country will be starting to pay real dividends and be strongly felt.

Crabcakes has posted on here for years and is one of the more thoughtful posters, whose opinions I take seriously.

Nev is a twat who's just turned up and quotes right wing and Corbynite talking points.

I know who I'll listen to.
