Jobcentres didn't have long queues of people trying to get in, even in 1979. Likewise, when you save work on your computer, it's unlikely you use a floppy disk.

I think this is fair enough. Spending the contingency on (as far as I can tell) nothing which couldn't have been foreseen is like raiding a piggy bank. You need to restock the contingency, hence tax rises and extra borrowing which are likely coming in the budget.

This isn't to me like the bad, more general household budget analogies you get. I think reducing the current deficit is something the government very much should be doing (though not with the benefit cuts apparently coming).

You don't like it and find it hackneyed. It's not an accurate analogy. But it is a good visual shorthand way of getting the message they want across.

Again, what would be a better visual metaphor?
