I like to play poker, and you see a lot of his type at the tables - they come in with a wodge of cash and use it to push other players out of the game. Not enough money/chips to match them, and if they're wrong, they can take the hit. You, on the other hand, can't.

Poker is, at its core, about convincing your opponent that they can't beat you. One way to do this is to basically price people out of the game. You raise the stakes until they cannot match you. When players show their hands, if they have better cards, they have taken a big risk. Meanwhile, you still have lots of money and nobody's luck lasts forever. If they lose, they're out of the game.

If they fold (concede the round to you), they lose some money, but not all of it. Next round, you take another slice off them.

This is why a lot of games insist on everyone starting with the same amount of money or chips. Then you can still do the pricing out, but only after you've legit won some hands.

Poker is a good analogy for Musk because while skill comes into it, it is also based around luck. Tesla nearly folded a couple of times. Space X the same. The fact neither did was both entirely outside of his control, and the skill and talent that helped him get lucky was also not his. He is, by all accounts, a fucking idiot of the worst sort - the kind who knows just enough to sound like a genius to people who don’t know much, but who immediately comes unstuck when talking to any topic expert.

At least with him, it seems inevitable the crash is coming. He’s far, far too arrogant and convinced of his own ability at this point, but there is nothing to back it up. Tesla will go first because he doesn’t own it, and it has been losing sales hand over fist. The investors will force him out. Space X will lose contracts with the US govt., and Twitter is an ongoing bin fire that is rapidly becoming a right-wing bot farm with no income.

That is assuming he doesn’t just drop dead from a heart attack or stroke first, because he is clearly on a LOT of drugs.

Yesterday he was claiming that community notes helped to protect against fake news and misinformation but they clearly don't. Some of the notes do act as a warning but very often they are removed if somebody challenges the note. Some posts could well have been up for some time before they are corrected but by then the damages as been done as we saw in Southport when fake news was put out about the name and religion of the person responsible for the stabbings.

Basically, it's an old tale of wealth is inherited but intelligence isn't. He only appears smart because rather than buying an NFL team or spending all his time on yachts with supermodels, his hobbies were nerdy stuff like computers, on a coil of time when such things were mysterious boxes of wizardry beyond the comprehension of the average Joe, up to Steve Jobs making computing cool (and it becoming an essential tool for even the most rudimentary of workplace administration.)

As for why he's currently a bedfellow of the fascistic far-right? Myriad reasons, the most prominent of which seem to be a ketamine addiction to cope with the emotional turmoil of failing to understand how he, the world's richest man, lost two family members (an ex-partner and a daughter) to the trans community. Thing with Musk was that the nerdy oddball never existed - that was purely a creation of benefit of the doubt and lack of exposure/evidence. In hindsight he’s always been obnoxious to his employees, arrogant and foolhardy with his businesses, prone to making moronic choices, an out and out bullshitter, and astoundingly vain and narcissistic (hence the hair transplant and jawline surgery, alleged pec implants, as well as the one-man breeding programme because he thinks his genetic stock is so great it needs to be passed on).

Plus like a lot of tech bro CEOs he thinks he’s hardworking because he stays up late and hangs around the office a lot. But issuing demands at 2am when you’re just sat in your office pissing about on Twitter is not the same as actually having to be on call to do some hardcore coding at 2am. And the poor sod in the latter position can’t decide to take the next week off if they feel like it either.
