Oldies may recall a Maily conspiracy theory that Ted Heath caused inflation by decimalising the currency. Counting in base ten was also a sinister Continental innovation undermining our sovereignty.
Lots of potential for a similar vibe here by doing away with our good old British coppers.
Personally I’m less inclined to use cash when the price isn’t rounded.

Again, "What about the poor pensioners, won't anyone think of them?".

Let's be really generous and say that someone's 95. They've been dealing with ATMs and decimal currency since they were 42, and without ha'pennies since they were 55.

I'll admit that I'll be as sad to see 'shrapnel' go as my dad was to see the demise of steam on the railways. But, just like my dad, I understand that there are genuine valid reasons for doing away with these things. I'm not sure that the average Fail reader is capable of being quite so grown up about it.

The Aussies & Kiwis got rid of their 1c & 2c coins (the latter also took out 5c coins) years ago and from what I see are surviving perfectly well. When paying in cash, total costs are rounded up or down to the nearest 5 (AU) or 10 (NZ) cents.

A little fact - Australia used their old 1 & 2 cent coins to make the bronze medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Once in a while I take a bag of accumulated shrapnel coinage to one of those machines in Sainsbury's that automatically counts up all your loose change and gives you a voucher that you can use to buy cheap whisky in the store.

The Mail's ridiculous virtue signalling about copper coins is nothing whatsoever to do with the actual use of them or the alleged affect on bloody pensioners. It's about the loss of another supposely treasured slice of real Britain. Peter Hitchens will be along shortly with 750 words on the how it's a tragedy for real conservatives like him.

Surely the likes of Hitchins and Rees-Mogg will be happy to see the end of decimal coins and say it’s a sign that “we” want to return to l.s.d
