Ante-post scores on the doors. How Braverman can be second after she stabbed the party in the back2 days before the election by cuddling up to Reform, God knows. But MPs will keep her out of the last two. They probably won't be able to keep Badenoch out, and she came fourth behind Truss, Sunak and Mordaunt.

Surprised to see Victoria Atkins even get 2%. Is that respect for at least showing up for the party in the campaign?

Jenrick may as well defect to Reform now if he can’t win a Tory leadership contest against the daughter of African immigrants.

I’d bet on Cleverly finishing in the last two. Most of these MPs will know the lessons from making Duncan Smith and Corbyn leaders and although I haven’t check, they’re more likely to have LDs and Labour in second place in their constituency than Reform.

A few initial observations on the pre-contest that seems to be going on. Braverman and Badenoch seem to have descended into a private war of words which is being played out very publicly. All very unseemly. The advice that has been bandied around about not offering simple solutions to complex problems seems to have gone completely over the heads of those on the more firm side of the right.

As for the contest itself, well it has not got off to a good start with the somewhat messy election to the 1922 Committee. Let us hope when it comes to drawing up the election timetable they have more success.

I have said before that parties do not learn the lesson of other parties and the Conservatives are proving that in spades this time around. Their shadow ministers need to concentrate on their House of Commons work rather than trying to score cheap points on social media on Labour's supposed failings after a week in office, notwithstanding what they "achieved" in 14 years maxing out on the "mess we inherited" card in the process even trying to use it to distance themselves from the previous leader in many cases. They will not gain much traction especially as their policy proposals were so roundly rejected a week ago, indicating they need a fundamental re-think. They managed it after 1945 when the Research department drew up the Industrial Charter, whether the current Conservative Party is clever enough to devise something of that ilk is another matter.

For all the talk of 'Tradition' Conservative values and supporters, I don't think they've been particularly right-wing very often in the modern era. Thatcher from 1983 and this lot post-2019 definitely but for the rest of post-war they've either been One Nationers or else had a vestige of social liberalism with the headbangers kept in check.

Socially, they've been aware they're going against the tide (and indeed have sometimes made a point of it). If you look back to the early 80s, with "hang Mandela", let AIDS rip through the gays, shut down Liverpool etc, it all looks pretty fucking embarrassing. They've lost the church, and the entrepreneur spirit outweighed the traditional solid business model, whatever Thatcher said about her dad's grocery shop. She was brought up there, but was more influenced by Denis and his friends in RTZ.

In the novel "Casino Royale", James Bond (thinly veiled mouthpiece for Ian Fleming) argues that much of the Tory offer in 1952 would look suspiciously leftie back in the 1920s. True, but times change and so do political spectra. Best to remember that their aim is the conservation of power in their hands, and will do anything to achieve that.

Most of the gamers I know're strident lefties, but he may be chasing the ones who think that women and black people shouldn't be Space Marines (who Warhammer have already told to take a long walk off a short pier). I already see Carl Benjamin and Count Dankula in the replies.

This is surprising. I didn't know any of the current Tories had any sort of hinterland. Cleverley might be an actual normal* human being after all! What next?

*Well, normal compared to the other remaining Tories, anyway.

This reminds me that I’m still waiting to see one of Boris’s model bus efforts 😁

Joking aside, I genuinely think people not pressing him on this was missing a trick. It was a blatant, clumsily delivered lie purely engineered (probably by Dominic “genius” Cummings) to ham-fistedly alter Google results for “Boris bus” away from the Brexit NHS lie bus.

But if pressed, he wouldn’t have been able to help himself about it - he would never admit he’d lied, would have kept on doubling down about making these models, but would also never actually produce a model bus because clearly he never had one and would never stoop to making one. It would have been increasingly obvious and increasingly absurd.
