Who is your nomination for the Portillo Moment of the 2024 General Election?

There are rules though as the phrase has become a little overused in this campaign.

1. The loser has to be someone of national standing preferably a serving cabinet minister, high profile bankbenchers such as ex cabinet members can be accepted.

2. The loser must be someone who at present is not thought to be at real risk of losing their seat. In 1997 Portillo spent the first couple of hours after polls closed in the BBC studio before going to his count.

3. In addition to the above the candidate should be someone thought of as a possible party leader when a vacancy becomes available, probably around 10.01 on 4 July.

As a sub question, will there be any Gordon Walker moments for Labour? A prominent figure who defies the trend and loses their seat whilst many others win?

Rees-Mogg, Steve Barcley, Priti Patel, Jonathon Gullis, Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, Grant Shapps, Corporal Francois, John Penrose (my MP)

Sunak seems like an irrelevance now as his political career is over come what may

I know they don't meet the criteria but I'd laugh like a drain if Farage failed for the eighth time and Galloway lost his seat.

That’s the key thing. A Portillo is somebody on the way up.

Badenoch and Braverman will probably both win, but they’re the sort of people who fit the bill, more than Gullis or sundry backbench obnoxious-crat.

Hunt is probably done at the top level, same as Sunak. My choice is Shapps.

Portillo was special because he was seen as a future leader and likely PM. At the time he fell we didn't know the final result (obviously) and it was reasonable to suppose he'd be in with a shot of winning in 2001.
The difference is, I don't see any of these people as still being contenders, if and when, the Tories next win an election as I hope that will be at least ten years hence.

That's the difference between Farage and the Tories: Tories can tolerate people of colour provided they are rich enough, that cuts no ice with Farage.
