What a shame

The joint owner of GB News has lost a legal battle with the South African government over £34m of silver secretly salvaged from a second world war shipwreck.

Paul Marshall, who is lining up a bid for the Daily Telegraph, had claimed ownership of 2,364 silver bars his company had recovered from the bottom of the Indian Ocean.

This claim was successfully challenged in the UK supreme court by the South African government, which said it was the rightful owner of the silver as the metal had been bought for the South African mint...

... Argentum is among many businesses owned by Marshall, one of the UK’s most successful financiers, who uses his personal funds to finance media outlets including Unherd and GB News. The right-wing news channel made a loss of £42m last year – slightly more than the value of the salvaged silver – and announced redundancies.

The wreck of the SS Tilawa was found 2.5km under the sea and in 2017 Argentum spent six months secretly salvaging the silver, before sailing its booty to Southampton. The company unloaded the silver into a warehouse and declared it to the official Receiver of Wreck, believing it was legally owned by the UK government, only to be surprised when South Africa asserted ownership.

Argentum later argued that even if South Africa was the rightful owner, it should be paid for recovering the silver. Under maritime law, it is possible to claim a fee for voluntary salvage regardless of whether the owner of the property consented to the salvage operation.. .
... Jonathan Goulding, of the law firm HFW, who advised the South African government, said the ruling was significant: “In short, the court has firmly sent a message to those hoping to find and claim ownership of lost treasure that finders are not always keepers.”
It wasn't even enough to cover GBeebies' losses last year. And now he's made next to nothing out of the whole thing. My heart bleeds for him.

Marshall, Banks, Musk...seems to be that southern Africa/precious metals and jewels tends to be an arsehole magnet.

I note Van and Eric's support doesn't extend to actually playing the gig, not when they can still fill venues off their own back.

One of the headliners appears to be a busker from Brighton. He claims to have had millions of views on Youtube, but to be fair, so did the woman who put a cat in a bin.

From Open Britain.
According to Boris Johnson’s biographer Andrew Gimson, the disgraced former PM is once again plotting a return to UK politics.

Johnson reportedly plans to seize upon the chaos of a monumental Conservative defeat on July 4th. As Nigel Farage is expected to make a power play for the Conservative leadership, Johnson will ostensibly head him off in a battle for the soul of the new opposition. Pick your populist poison.

Either way, the opposition is going to be a circus. But a disillusioned and fractured Conservative party presents ideal conditions for Johnson, long known as an “insurgent” operator that feeds off discontent to win “protest” votes – as he did successfully in 2019.

It’s another indication that voting out the Conservatives, while necessary for democracy and basic functionality of government, is not going to solve our problems overnight. Five years in opposition will present ample time for either Farage, Johnson (or both, should the unholy duo find common ground again as they have in the past) to build a new and reformulated right-wing populist movement.

Keep in mind that they could potentially be boosted by the ascendant far-right in Germany, France, Italy, and Spain – as well as Donald Trump in the White House. Starmer’s Labour, should they win as predicted in July, will face unprecedented challenges from that corrupt and lawless coalition, potentially at an international scale. Expect the British press, American social media companies, libertarian think-tanks and the UK’s right-wing dark money networks to be working overtime.

The real fight for democracy may still lie ahead.

Lots of Ifs and Ands in that piece. Hard right at the wheel in other countries might be a good advert for not going there. When will a by-election come up for Bozo to bag a seat? And its now possible the Tories won’t even be the main opposition party. Farage’s net approvals ratings are consistently negative and nearly as bad as Corbyn’s were. He’d cause another Tory civil war if he tried to carpet bag their leadership.
You may well see a mirror image of the 80s with PM Keir not being widely liked but looks competent and in charge. Unlike the shit show of an opposition which also has a breakaway of moderates aligning with resurgent Lib Dems.

This is delicious

Tommy Robinson has been arrested in Canada on suspicion of immigration offences.

Footage posted online shows Robinson - real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon - being handcuffed by two plain-clothed police officers who explain to the 41-year-old that he is the subject of ‘an outstanding immigration warrant’.

He is then led away.

He was arrested shortly after giving a speech in Calgary on Monday...
