I've never understood the obsession with Palestine. To be utterly cynical - is it just about Israel and Jews? Is it about US imperialism? Because to my sceptical eye there are many other cases of injustice around the world, but they don't get a mention.

At our CLP there was an elderly woman and Palestine was her only cause, even to the extent of calling on us to boycott our local bin collections because the same multinational that did the collections was involved in the construction of transport links in Israel...

Also, these people are deranged and not closely acquainted with reality.

It's one of those issues that's trivially easy to condense down to good/bad, black/white, us/them. Israel represents an island of broadly Western values in a sea of an entirely different tradition, and if you are happy to accept West=bad and therefore anything non-West=good, or at least better, then you can make almost anything flow from there.
This, of course, means dismissing the diversity in the Arab world, the presence of Lebanon, and a host of other obvious nuances, even before you start to delve under the surface. But we all know that the rigidly ideological left, just as the right, will bend facts to match their prejudices.

Perhaps there's an element of the Jewish conspiracy to control the world tallying with the mysterious shadowy elements that prevented St Jeremy from becoming Prime Minister. Perhaps it's because they will always unquestioningly support the underdog and Palestinians are currently the highest-profile examples. Or because Israel is so closely linked with the big, bad USA. Trying to understand their mentality is like trying to reason with a toddler full of e numbers but the way things are going we're headed into the second successive election where anti-Semitism will play a large part. These people are not normal.

The entire situation is so mixed up in emotion and very raw and recent history (plus a good amount of collective and deserved guilt over many, many things) that it's very hard to apply any sort of rational analysis. I'd just say that the Palestinian people are just as much proxies as the Israelis. And anyone setting anyone else up as a martyr is a cunt.

Killer Whale wrote: Mon Dec 18, 2023 1:32 pm Don't know what point the Mail's trying to make there. If it's that Starmer thinks your pet has more/as many rights as brown people, then I expect the Mail demographic to be broadly in agreement with him.
What if it's brown people using a dog to stay in the country when they should go back to Overthereistan??

There is clearly now a compaign by the Mail against Starmer and his previous life as a barrister. About six times this mroning I have had to post a link to Twatter/X explaining what the cab rank rule is and how if the brief is within his area of competency Starmer could not have turned down the job. Advocating for someone does not mean you agree with them. After all when Richard Ferguson QC defended Rose West was he condoning murder? Of course not.

I assume the press are holding back their best ‘Starmer defended criminal’ copy for the GE.
It’s his role as DPP that will be more fertile. The law of averages mean the CPS chucked out flimsy prosecution cases against villains who offended again. If they raped white women or beat up a middle England couple while burgling a home, then it’s jackpot day for the Mail.

The dog story depends on which part of the Mail's audience they're going for. On the one hand, lots of old dears and people who go soppy over cute pets. On the other, plenty of wannabe hard cases who'd say "give us a stick and I'll batter it" like Littlejohn's fictional Geordie friend, just to prove how much of a fucking man they are.

And here was me thinking the Mail and all the rest of the media were on his side because he's a Tory establishment lackey. Of course, on planet Earth he'll get as much abuse as every Labour leader gets and he's known that since the day he got the job.
