If he stands down, or announces his intention to do so, he's as good as throwing the election. "Why should we vote for you when your own leader can't be bothered to defend their record?" isn't the sort of thing candidates want to be asked on every doorstep, in every interview.

In times gone by, it would have been suggested that an MP in a very safe true blue seat would have stood down and have Cameron parachuted in their place through a by-election, but I'd assume the nominal risk in doing that now is that if Sunak tried to do this and it backfired with the seat turning red or yellow, it would almost certainly be the end of the current government - even allowing for their own record-setting brazenness, even they surely couldn't attempt to carry on with any effective authority if that happened, which it why I don't see that happening.

So, either Westminster Hall or a COVID-19 style situation where Cameron answers questions with his mug on screens either hanging from the ceiling of the Commons or the sides of the public gallery?
