Saturday Morning with Esther and Phil GB News, 11 March 2023, 10:00

Summary
This document sets out Ofcom’s Decision on a GB News programme presented by two sitting Conservative MPs, Esther McVey and Philip Davies, who interviewed the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt. Ofcom was alerted to this content by 45 complaints about the due impartiality of the programme.
Ofcom investigated under the Broadcasting Code’s due impartiality rules. This was a current affairs programme and therefore Rule 5.3 (on politicians presenting news programming) was not engaged. However, when dealing with matters of major political controversy and major matters relating to current public policy, all Ofcom licensees must comply with the heightened special impartiality requirements in the Code. These rules require broadcasters to take additional steps to preserve due impartiality – namely by including and giving due weight to an appropriately wide range of significant views.
The presenters interviewed the Chancellor about the Government’s approach to economic and fiscal policies in the context of the forthcoming Spring Budget (which was due to be announced four days after the broadcast of the programme, on 15 March 2023). The interview was pre-recorded and the programme also included a studio discussion and analysis with guest panellists.
Ofcom found that the programme did not include an appropriately wide range of significant views, for example those that either criticised, opposed or put forward policy alternatives to the viewpoints given by the three Conservative Party politicians, on a matter of major political controversy and current public policy.
GB News therefore failed to preserve due impartiality, in breach of Rules 5.11 and 5.12 of the Broadcasting Code.
Ofcom recognises that, in accordance with the right to freedom of expression, broadcasters have
freedom to decide the editorial approach of their programmes, including offering their audiences
innovative forms of debate.
However, this programme was presented by two sitting MPs from one political party. It featured
them interviewing the Chancellor of the same political party about a matter of major political
controversy and current public policy. In our view, in these circumstances, the Licensee should have
taken additional steps to ensure that due impartiality was preserved.

March 1982, I copped off with a girl whom I shall call "Vicky". I was 17, she was 16. We were at it like rabbits (or teenagers).

April 1982, she turned 17. We were still at it like rabbits.

May 1982, I turned 18. Wild horses, let alone the police, couldn't have stopped us going at it like rabbits for ten months whilst we waited for her to turn 18.

Sophie Cocoran is an idiot, as is anyone who attempts to stop teenagers shagging each other.

The first tweet is just obvious nonsense, and the second is probably what she came up with after thinking for five fucking seconds (and I'm being exceptionally generous here).

It's just that it's a point that has been made so many times before, even (especially) by those nasty, sex-positive liberal types, who have ideas like power dynamics and informed consent to explain why it's not at all a good thing, as opposed to Sophie's "messed up psychologically" broad brush thinking (and the implied swipe at the mentally ill).

I note that when it came to the congenitally middle aged Prince Andrew swimming in the kiddie pool, Ms. Corcoran had absolutely nothing to say.

High standard of supporters Sophie has. I reckon Martin probably votes for David TC Davies in Monmouthshire.

Martin thinks being naked in front of teenagers is indecent exposure. If you're on Twitter tell Martin to take out a private prosecution that you'll definitely chip in for.

Clare Foges was chief speech writer for cuddly Cameron.

Absolute jokers.

Mr GB News seems to have hit upon this "investigated by an independent body" phrase. What does that mean? Cops have to be called before he does anything? Of course he'd then do nothing because the cops were investigating.

Was Hugh Edwards investigated by an "independent body"?
The GB News chief executive, Angelos Frangopoulos, told the culture select committee he is monitoring “serious allegations” against his primetime presenter but “none of these allegations have been admitted or proved by an independent body”.

In a letter, the GB News boss acknowledged that the Sun is investigating Wootton’s conduct relating to his time with the newspaper, while MailOnline has paused his column. “Were a formal complaint to be raised by a member of our staff, then GB News would, of course, take appropriate steps,” he said.

Frangopoulos also defended the station’s coverage of sexual assault and rape allegations against Russell Brand, arguing that “none of these have yet been admitted or proved by an independent body”. Brand has denied the allegations, saying all his relationships were consensual.

There's two possible explanations. Well, there's three, but "Wooton is well liked, popular, brings in a huge audience and is too big to fail" is obviously just fucking stupid.

He's either got enough dirt in the locker to bring the whole shitshow down (either his own actions being tied to the channel, or direct extortion of his bosses for their behaviour) or he's being looked out for because he has something else (probably a big story about someone else) that could be deployed in extremis to take the heat off.

Here you go. Grim indeed.

Sounds like Fox made the comments but Wootton not only didn't challenge but laughed along. Wootton claimed that he reacted "out of shock" and "was in no way amused by the comment".

Nervous laughter? Get in the sea.
