Squealer has no fucking clue, has he? Starmer knows *precisely* what he is doing with this appointment : one, it is a genuinely excellent appointment, echoing Blair’s appointment of Jonathan Powell as his chief of staff back in 97. Two, he will positively welcome the controversy this is stirring up amongst the Tories, and will have anticipated it. Reminding voters of the sordid details of the “Partygate” scandal at the very point Johnson and the Tories want it to be swept under the carpet quietly if at all possible, suits Labour’s purposes just fine. Three, the “concerns” of the likes of Rees-Mogg and Dorries simply do not stand up. Sue Gray was appointed by Johnson himself specifically as an independent option beyond reproach, but only after his first appointee, Simon Case, had to recuse himself as he’d attended some of the parties himself. Gray’s work merely documented evidence already either in the public domain or also known to the Met. Fourth, if Gray’s appointment is blocked, you can be fairly certain Starmer has an equally fine alternative option already in mind. All in all, a quite brilliant move by Starmer.

This is the thing. If I was on the anti-woke right, my line would be "credible allegations against a man who the liberal left took to their hearts".
