Papers this morning dominated by the news that an Oxford college JCR has decided - through a free and overwhelmingly one-sided vote - to take a picture of the queen off a wall.

Part of me wonders if this would even make the news if it had happened at, say, Manchester University, or Liverpool John Moores, or any of the "jumped up rusticated polys" as Johnson put it, that make up the bulk of the HE sector.

I mean, I get that Oxbridge is all part of that "Englishness" thing, with a resonance among the wider population that otherwise considers all students wet layabouts. Punting, bowler-hatted porters, honey for tea and the May ball, Morse, Lewis, Brideshead Revisited and all the rest of it. Think back to McKuntzie's objection to Benjamin Zephaniah taking up a post there, playing on the fear that YOUR daughter might be in close proximity of a black man (like the daughter of Baz Arsehole of 22 Shit Street is going to Oxford for anything but a gig). An idea of what Englishness should be, perhaps. And yes, a fair few senior Tories went to said college, so there's a "never would have happened in my day" angle.

It's just so bloody pathetic. Students make a decision that affects nobody outside perhaps a few hundred people, all of whom were consulted and most of whom agreed with the move. No paintings have been burned (hell, it wasn't even an actual painting but a commercially available print), they may as well have ripped down the Crow poster or that one of the tennis player scratching her arse. And it's front fucking page news. Set the chatter agenda for a few days: bloody students, bloody kids, bloody lefty academics, bloody clever people, and another level of resentment applied to the dullards.

MCR, so very likely a higher proportion of international students. Welcome to the postgrad world, Britain. It's a deeply scary and unsettling place, where such seismic democratic decisions are made on a daily basis...

Magdalen is also one of the most gorgeous and old-fashioned colleges around, full to the brim with signs and symbols pleasing to the Yes This Is Proper crowd who'd sooner see a college as another fucking gift shop than a place for the serious and ever-contested (there are plenty at Oxford who'd disagree with the move too, I'm quite sure, but it's also the MCR's decision to make, so stfu) search for meaning and truth.

One thing I just don't get is this belief that Johnson would "be a right laugh" and that "you could go for a pint with him". A visit to the pub with him would be him taking the piss out of the punter's accent and background, while getting them to buy all the drinks, cadging their smokes, and hitting on their partner.

Their latest trick is to add a heavy implication of "and we pay" to each of these stories.

A recent SYB type on facebook suggested that the foreign students ought to be more grateful to those who pay for their education (Implication "UK hard earned taxpayers form the University of life).
Her command of the language have me the impression that she wasn't familiar with universities; even less their governance.

When others suggested that overseas postgrads pay massive fees that keep the whole dog and pony show running she "Didn't come here to get personal attacks".

Earlier this seek a few US based wargamers started bitching about increased postal charges when ordering form Europe, with a very "those guys are stiffing us" angle.
Another European supplier chipped in with links to increased charges raised by (wait for it), the US Postal Service.

Rather than take this as face, the complainants justified the higher charges because "USA subsidies the rest of the world".

The 3 constants in these complaints are:
1. Sneaky foreigners up to no good.
2. How dare you contradict my rant with facts.
3. Well if it wasn't foreigners, the "no good" was completely justified.

Garnish with a:
4. Americans always happy to be fleeced, as long as it's in a patriotic cause.

All I can assume is that some people are not at all fussy who they drink with.

I reckon I'd scarce have the head off the first pint before I'd be down to "So, Sandy, some stretch in the evenings these days, aye?"

I'll just leave this here:

GMP's new chief constable 'absolutely would not' take the knee - and believes public are fed up with 'woke' policing

Greater Manchester Police's new chief constable has said he 'absolutely would not' take the knee.

Stephen Watson believes the level of 'woke' policing has passed a 'high water mark' of tolerance from the public, who would rather see officers catch burglars.

He said the public is 'fed up' with 'virtue-signalling police officers' and believes that the impartiality of officers could be undermined by responses to campaign groups including actions such as taking the knee or wearing their pins, badges or rainbow shoelaces.

On whether he would take the knee in uniform, Mr Watson told The Daily Telegraph : “No, I absolutely would not.

"I would probably kneel before the Queen, God, and Mrs Watson, that’s it.”

Remember, of course, that speaking like this to align oneself with the right wing talking points de nos jours is neither political correctness or virtue signalling.
