The legend that is Peter Hitchens had a piece in the Mail on Sunday last month claiming this as fact. He was slaughtered on Twitter but as usual, Pete doubled down on his assertion which is pretty standard fayre in looney part of the right wing spectrum.

Tories will continue to enjoy baseline support in the early 30s they just don’t know how to get up to 40 anymore. Lee Anderson and Matt Goodwin targeting working class Labour voters by banging on about wokes hasn’t even moved the dial. So do they eat shit and call Rory Stewart and Osborne back for a chat?

The thing about "wokery" is that while many are fine with having a moan about that lot banning Baa Baa Black Sheep, they're not so keen when it starts to hit close to home. Council estates are more diverse than the likes of Anderson might think.

Illustrative example - a friend of mine lives on a Leeds estate. The other day she was helping out a neighbour remove some bushes from the end of her garden, and another neighbour asked if they could have the branches to make a trellis. Friend is white English, trellis guy is Hong Kong Chinese, other neighbour is recently arrived woman from Afghanistan.

Also, factor into things the reactions to the death of Paul O'Grady. Lots of people realising they loved watching a trans person and drag queen.

I'm aware of the way conservative influences use research papers..

For example: "Dr Andrew Wakefield is brave enough to break consensus and tell us DA TROOF".

An old trick that's been used for every lost cause from lead in cider, tobacco, lead(again)ed petrol, climate change, fast food and very recently GROWTH!!

Citing no evidence is a clear sign of spouting made up shit.
Citing just one paper or author is frequently a sign of collusion to make shit up.
That's not what's going on here. It's worth looking at the exchange between Smith and Jon Portes.

Smith isn't one of those people. He has lots of positions, probably centrist overall, even if his manner can be a bit tediously iconoclast. Portes respects him, clearly. The paper Smith quotes is by a reputable think tank, not some Tufton Street outfit. The people who write it think that slavery was very significant in capitalism, and end by saying "Marx was right". Smith picks up on the overall economic effect of slavery in the paper, which is less high than most of us would have thought. Portes thinks other indicators are more relevant- see the change in employment in areas where land owners have big slaveholdings. There's a strong movement from agriculture to industry.

Saying the quiet part out loud again:

Tory politician claims all white men should have black slaves in racist outburst
The allegations emerged after an audio recording appeared online and was identified as Mr Edwards' voice.

The Pembrokeshire County councillor - who also sat as a magistrate until he resigned in July last year - said he had referred himself to ombudsmen and left the party.

The Conservatives confirmed it was investigating the allegations and that self-employed hairdresser Mr Edwards had not yet been suspended.

On the recording, the speaker says: "Nothing wrong with the skin colour at all.

"I think all white men should have a black man as a slave or black woman as a slave, you know.

"There's nothing wrong with skin colour, it's just that they're lower class than us white people."

Good example of the old George Burns joke that the people who know how to run the country are all cutting hair and driving cabs.

Meanwhile, also in Wales. I can't even bear to watch this with the sound on. What I can hear is the sound of votes in Vale of Glamorgan and Monmouth being pissed away.

Another rabbit bolts from the last unharvested patch of field

The Conservative MP for Scarborough and Whitby has confirmed he will not stand at the next general election.

Sir Robert Goodwill, 66, has held the seat for 18 years since winning it from Labour in the 2005 election.

He served as a minister under David Cameron and Theresa May and is chairman of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee.

His decision to step down was due to his age and family interests, the Scarborough News reported...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c901e1ldg8wo.amp
He said he did not want "to go on too long", the newspaper added.
In this current political climate what would be the chance of that?
