Yet again the use of the phrase “lefty lawyers” when what they mean is “successful lawyers”. Because their political bent is both unknown and entirely irrelevant to the law - their success isn’t based on how they vote, it’s based on Braverman and Patel being found wanting to act illegally.

Funny how the judges who ruled against the govt. aren’t being blamed. Almost like they’re just trying to bully people into not taking cases rather than anything else.

Lawyers usually succeed when the laws that a government has introduced without proper scrutiny in the commons and the lords. If the Rwanda policy had been properly debated in the Lords all the lawyers who sit in the lords would have quickly highlighted the short-comings in the legislation. Because it wasn't debated in the lords it was left to lawyers to go to court to point of the short-comings in the policies.

I wonder if the lawyers who advised Shaun Bailey on his case were "lefty". But it was clearly highly competent, and instead of looking like a man who's career was over, he's off to the Lords.

I actually think the Met are right that the photo, apparently the only evidence, isn't enough. It can't tell you want the purpose of the gathering was. It's consistent with worked late, food provided, stopped for a photo. Would the CPS bother with it?

Somebody actually put 50p in the Speaker:

Tory MP rebuked over ‘crass racial slur’ in Commons

The speaker of the House of Commons rebuked a Conservative MP after he used the word J*** in parliament to refer to the Japanese.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle said the term, which was described by one Labour MP as an “outdated and crass racial slur”, “should not be used”.

The row erupted just days after a Tory minister was criticised for using the phrase “little man” in relation to China.

The comment was made by Mark Francois, a former Armed Forces minister, during questions to the defence secretary Ben Wallace.

Labour’s Sarah Owen attacked the use of “ethnic slurs” and what she told MPs was an “unacceptable undercurrent of othering”.

A Labour source said: "If there was ever any doubt, the nasty party is firmly back.

"While Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party are distracted by scandal after scandal, their MPs are bringing our Parliament into disrepute by using derogatory language in the chamber.

"Mark Francois may need reminding that it is 2022, not 1940. He should apologise for this language.”

The Irony of Francois, an inadequate whose entire political career has been theatrical overcompensation, using "Little Man" as a put down.

Some news to bring a smile to your face on this chilly November evening

The Conservatives’ popularity has crashed to its lowest point in 15 years as it battles a major lack of trust over its management of the economy, a new poll reveals.

Sixty-two per cent of Britons said they didn’t like the Tories while 60 per cent said they no longer trusted the party on the economy, according to findings from Ipsos.

In a further blow, nine out of 10 of those who said they no longer trusted the Conservatives on the economy said the party was unlikely to regain it by the time of the next election, due by January 2025.

On reducing the cost of living and improving Britain’s public services, the findings are even more dire for the Conservatives with just under three quarters of voters saying they didn’t trust them to deliver...

The worrying thing about this is the percentages who still trust the Tories

Mention of Chloe Smith gives me an excuse to share this filleting she received live on air from Jeremy Paxman in 2012 (from about the six minute mark).......

Despite everything, Smith and Wragg came across as comparatively sane individuals. I shudder to think at the Johnsonian flotsam and jetsam who'll be replacing them as Tory parliamentary candidates in 2024.

Presumably retaining one of those hated "lefty lawyers" to fight his corner.
I’m guessing he’s been advised by former Attorney General Suella Braverman, who’s a KC don’t you know!
