I don't believe in evil, but I do think she has a psychotic streak and gets pleasure from acting with cruelty, sadism even, to people she sees as vulnerable. Not exactly positive character traits.

She is also a narcissist - there are large numbers of them in the current Tory party, it seems, not just Johnson.

And the press - the Mail, Express and Telegraph, play down these disastrous traits and tell the people that all is normal...

My guess is that she was told from an early age that she was brilliant and destined for great things. While by no means thick, this gave her an arrogance that led to a harsh dose of reality when she was passed by people who put in the hard hours. Rather than doubling her efforts, she saw it as everyone else not recognising her genius, and developed a very bitter streak and nasty attitude towards anyone she thought was getting for free what she was entitled to.

She also understood that as a woman of colour in the Tory party, she has to be perceived as "tough" if she wants to be taken seriously.

Basically, she's Arnold Rimmer.

PS I guess the ERG demanded one of the great offices. Although the thought of Leaky Sue spending the next 2 years in wellies doing photo ops in the rain and mud at nature reserves may have crossed Sunak's mind and prompted an emperor-style chuckle.

Immigration control.
Immigrant hate.
Sadistic anti-immigrant policies and actions.

I think she is mentally unwell.

Go a level lower; what personal characteristics lead her to act as she does and believe what she does? After all, she could achieve all those things in a much more humane manner.

You're never going to lose the Tories by having a Home Secretary that's too right-wing.

The membership, no. But until recently the parliamentary party not so much.

Johnson's purge has meant that the Taliban have a much greater influence at Westminster.

I wonder if the government will even acknowledge this:

Firebombing targets migrants at processing centre in Dover

A man has firebombed a reception centre for small boat migrants in Kent.

Police said up to three incendiary devices were thrown at the Western Jet Foil facility in Dover, where asylum seekers are processed after being rescued in the English Channel.

A witness from the Reuters news agency said the perpetrator drove to a nearby petrol station and killed himself but police have not confirmed the suspect’s death.

Nice hatchet job on a largely pacifist, mindful philosophy.

That seems to be the BTL drift in the Mail, but not too heavy on the tolerance

I fear she'll try to brazen it out and double down on "In the real world people do short cuts and don't always follow rules to the letter, because my priority is delivering for the people and blah".

It's not too big a reach to suspect she does these things to cause pain and distress, is it?

Because she can.

That's just it. We can talk about psychology and upbringing but some people are just plain nasty and enjoy causing suffering to others. Luckily most of them never get beyond bullying in the playground or shouting at shop staff. Unluckily one of them is now in charge of national security.
