As Van Jones said on CNN, "One down, many more to go..."

A good day.

To a degree. At uni, my law tutor (an American) explained that the OJ Simpson trial jury had reached the verdict it had, because the defence team had framed their case as "Can a black man get a fair trial in the city of Rodney King?". If the answer is yes, then a not guilty verdict follows. Otherwise we're in wild west "We'll give him a fair hearing and then hang him" territory.

AFAICS the defence here rested on "stop being mean to cops, you don't know what pressure they're under", while holding random members of the public to a higher standard of behaviour than apparently trained police officers. Chauvin's refusal to testify on the grounds of self-incrimination wasn't helping them either. Obvious conclusion is that he's either stupid or bent.

I just hope that the message America takes from this trial is that the police have to reform and serve their entire community, and not just be a dumping ground for thugs wanting to put a bit of stick about with impunity.

While Colston was being taken from his place of prominence in Bristol and being put in the sea (well, docks), staff at the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Trust were undergoing exactly what the BLM people were protesting about:

Black and brown hospital staff were told by managers to use "Western names" as their own were too hard to pronounce, an inspection has found.

Workers at Bristol Children's Hospital and Weston General were told to use different names whilst on duty, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) said.

The CQC said the directive was "not acceptable".

The University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Trust insisted there was "no management instruction".

In a letter to the trust, the CQC said: "We were concerned to hear from staff that they have been told by line managers to adopt a 'Western work name' as the pronouncing of their name was too difficult.

"This is not acceptable.

"Individuals can only truly thrive in a work environment where they feel safe as themselves and belong, rather than having to 'fit in'."...

Would somebody from the Conservative Party like to quote a report that states Britain has no real deep-seated racism problem?

Nothing written down. No evidence chain. Just people being told in corridors to do a certain thing. Just like the targets jobcentre staff were given for rejecting/cancelling claims. One rogue staff member.

It's as Thatcher put it, no such thing as society. Just individuals making these decisions. In tandem, across the country, with no apparent connection between them, with no evidence of orders from the top.

How does it make a person racist to ask someone how to pronounce their unfamiliar name?

It can work the other way; I always surprised how difficult some find my surname (both English speakers and English as second language), to me it’s reasonably common name, even had 2 brothers play for Man Utd!

Don’t know, I was arguing the opposite. Why would someone have a problem asking someone how to pronounce their name? Is it because they believe the PC brigade will be on their back if they do? You’re not even allowed to say you’re English these days.
A lot of white English people are embarrassed at asking someone how to pronounce their name.

I remember the drug referral target luckily I knew I only had 3 months left and it was a quarterly target so I just ignored it. I think the only ones I ever referred to the benefit fraud target were people who were openly racist. Which sadly gave me enough.

But yeah localised random managers all setting the same targets, odd really.
