You've got to remember that to many a Tory, their dislike of civil servants isn't just because of their desire for small government - they have an actual loathing of these people personally, so the thought of them losing their jobs and being miserable is an added bonus. The only thing that could make it even better is being able to see their them being miserable.

I think the civil service cuts could prove to be an own goal. The Tories have basically said that the civil service has grown by 90,000 since 2016 as a result of the challenges of Brexit. So they admitting that Brexit has cost the taxpayer in the region of £20bn just for all the extra admin. So much for the much talked about Brexit bonus.

Johnson's latest brain fart to help families deal with the cost of living crisis is to lift the ban on BOGOF deals in supermarkets. Given that it took the government so long to bring in the ban in the first place most supermarkets had done away with the deals well before the ban was actually introduced.

Most supermarkets have moved on so it is very unlikely they will bring the deals back even if the ban is lifted. Tesco's have refined their club points system to offer targeted cuts for people with club cards along with money off vouchers for people spending over £50 etc. Sainsbury's have also improved their Nectar card deals offering lots of deals that are often more attractive than the BOGOF offers.
