Tower Hamlets has hurt Labour gains in London but it’s all Independent gain.

The Tories do well with Hindu voters nowadays, and have gone after them with various degrees of scrupulousness. Johnson discussing visas with Modi is probably very positive for them, building on the surprising (to lots of us) number of Asian Brexiters.

Is that an East African Asian vote rather than a religious affiliation trend? (Zac Goldsmith’s tacky anti-Muslim leaflets went down very badly with Hindu voters). Saw a polling company map in which its was only London and Leicester that identified as British over English. Understandable East African Asians have an emotional tie to Britishness. The only other spots that did outside of England were in Northern Ireland.

I don't suppose it's different to a lot of rural towns. Poor public transport, large supermarkets on the edge of town, great if you have a car otherwise it's hope the local Nisa have got what you want and you can afford it.

In so-called ‘Red Wall’ seats, gains in places such as Cumberland were offset by backward steps in the likes of Amber Valley and Hyndburn. As many out there on the doorstep will attest, Tory defeats were more down to the apathy of their base than mass switching to Labour. (Results for Scottish Labour and especially Welsh Labour were more positive, and deserve their own story.)

I see they didn’t mention Barnet can’t think why momentum activists wouldn’t be popular there and isn’t Croydon run by Momentum lot, that’s part of its issue. As for Amber Valley I assume this lot couldn’t tell you were it was previous to the election on Thursday.

If you are progressive you’ve got three parties to choose from and even more if you live in Wales or Scotland which had a chance of winning. You don’t at election time and the informal pact will play that out. As I said a strong third party helps Labour but a recovery in Scotland does too. It’s not a surprise that in recent weeks yes to independence has been falling.

It was Labour 1997-2010, and only narrowly retaken by the Tories in 2010, Don't know how wealthy it is, but the East Midlands generally are much better for the Tories than they were.
