Tonight Colin Brazier interviewed Katharine Birbalsingh, just before the interview Colin put a post on twitter say that she was his favourite headteacher. How on earth can you actually conduct a proper interview after declaring that you are a big fan of the person you are about to interview?

She was billed as Britain's strictest headteacher. But in practise this simply meant that she put more pupils in isolation than other headteachers. But what does putting pupils in isolation day after day actually achieve? They just fall further behind their classmates so that when they return to lessons they are an absolute nightmare to deal with.

Birbalsingh is a one trick pony who has made a fortune from telling Tory ministers exactly what they want to hear.

I am currently working at an academy which claims to be tough on discipline but in reality what this actually means is that around 20 kids a day are kicked out of lessons and end up in isolation. The academy chain got into a lot of trouble for putting so many kids into isolation so they relabelled their isolation room as 'reflection rooms' But basically they are sent there so they don't disturb the learning of other pupils in the class. Some pupils spend about 50% of the week in the reflection room so when they actually return to lesson they are so far behind other pupils in the class that they haven't got a clue what is going on which inevitably leads to more poor behaviour and more time out of lessons.

Because so many pupils end up in the reflections room it becomes more of a social club rather than a working environment. Sticking impressionable Year 7 pupils in with Year 11 pupils who have spent 5 years playing the system really isn't a good idea. Once a pupil has spent a couple of weeks in the reflection room it no longer becomes a big deal because pupils know that they ca stay in the roo and get away with doing the bare minimum work.

Without some indication of the behaviour of the kids in question, it's absolutely impossible to reach any conclusion on how strict she actually is. She might have Britain's Worst Classrooms, and actually be pretty permissive, or have a bunch of angels and just be a draconian windbag. I suspect the truth lies closer to the later than the former, but when did having only one stick, and it's a big stick, become a virtue? What happened to discernment, empathy, yer basic emotional intelligence?

Over the last couple of week the odious Dan Wootton has used his spot on GB News and his Mail column to attack the New Zealand Prime Minister and her Covid rules. Yesterday he let the cat out of the bag when he wrote an article which made it clear the personal animosity boiled down to the fact that he is currently not allowed to travel to the country.

It would really be funny if the New Zealand Prime Minister was really keep the ban on people entering the country just to wind up Wootton.

Sky News rises on Russia conflict as GB News falls

Once more viewers turned to news to understand what’s happening – and in this particular case to Sky News, whose reporters were actually shot at in Ukraine.

In the fortnight before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine from 10-23 February, Sky News was averaging 80,000/1% for individuals between 6am-2am and 45,000k/1.2% for ABC1s. In 6-11pm peak, the channel averaged 91,000/0.6% and 51,000/0.7% respectively.

From Thursday 24 February, the first day of war, to Sunday 6 March, Sky News’ average between 6am and 2am tripled in volume on the pre-invasion average to 233,000/3% as ABC1 adults grew two and a half times to 120,000/3.3%. In 6-11pm peak, Sky News averaged 276,000/1.9%, another threefold increase. ABC1 adults averaged 136,000/1.8%, two and a half times bigger.

GB News felt less of a bump. Pre-invasion 6am-2am average was 30,000/0.4% for individuals and 18,000/0.5% for ABC1s. In 6pm-11pm peak it averaged 48,000/0.3% and 28,000/0.4% respectively.

Since the 24, GB News’ 6am-2am average (31,000/0.4%) grew a modest 4.8% in volume on its pre-invasion average, while ABC1 adults (19,000/0.5%) represented a 5.4% rise. Between 6-11pm, however, GB News’ 41,000/0.3% average represented a 15% fall in volume, while its ABC1 adults ratings (25,000/0.3%) was down 13%.
