My MP was on Politics Live yesterday, defending Johnson’s position on this against Shami Chakrabarti (read: interrupting and talking over her a lot).

I only wish I was shocked. He's a lawyer, and I wonder what their professional standards body think of this.

I get the impression (based on Braverman and Raab) that many lawyer MPs aren't actually very good at law, and go into politics a) where their faint knowledge can impress people, and b) to get revenge.

You do wonder where their law degrees came from; American Samoa University?

He knew what he was doing.

In politics nothing happens by accident.

If there's anything to incite a radicalized mob to rabid violence quicker than Brexit, it's nonces and their apologists/defenders.

As well as the undignified stain that this lie will remain on record in Hansard, it's now threatening to deliver us another Jo Cox/Dennis Amess.

And the pork haystack won't even do a courteous action for Starmer's safety by withdrawing it and deescalating tensions. Beyond words how despicable this is.

Chris Bryant articulating my feelings very well on C4 News right now.

It's not a good attack line though- see Tory MPs and Cabinet members avoiding it. It reminds me of George Bush Snr doing the Willie Horton advert v Michael Dukakis, except that Bush Snr was a credible "elder statesman" type. Johnson isn't, and the result of chucking out bollocks like this is that more people notice he talks bollocks.

On the contrary, it deflects media attention away from Johnson and there's always the possibility that someone might actually assassinate Starmer, throwing Labour into disarray.

Well, that would deflect attention in the way that Gabby Giffords getting shot in the head outside Safeway deflected attention, but it wasn't good for Sarah Palin.

Dead cats aren't good dead cats if they confirm what people think about you. As I say, old man Bush could stink the place out with the Willie Horton ad. But if David Duke had run that, people would have just thought "There that fucker goes again!"
