It seems there are still a few comparatively sensible/sane Tories dotted around the HoC, although their numbers are getting perilously low with each passing year.

This chap was generally regarded as a highly competent Northern Ireland Secretary, which of course made him thoroughly unsuited to Johnson's cabinet. I rather enjoyed his recent putdown of the irascible John Redwood:

Simon Hoare, chair of the NI Select Committee, has the headbangers on his case for being sane.

Footage emerges of Johnson's strategy meeting for the approach to take with Northern Ireland.

Anna Soubry seems happy out of it and Sarah Wollaston is head of a patient group or something in Devon now.

Caroline Nokes and Greg Clark are reasonably presentable.

Here is another one, perhaps - Gavin Barwell. No longer an MP (he lost his Croydon Central seat to Labour in 2017), but he was Theresa May's Chief of Staff once Nick Timothy was shown the door.

Here he is from a few days ago, rather neatly summing up the Brexit realities which the likes of Lord Frost etc still refuse to acknowledge:

Being over 5 years old, I recall when Tugendhat was an absolute moon howler.

That he's considered sensible shows how far the Tories have lurched.

Generally voted against laws to promote equality and human rights
Consistently voted for a reduction in spending on welfare benefits
Consistently voted against paying higher benefits over longer periods for those unable to work due to illness or disability
Generally voted against greater public control of bus services
Consistently voted against a publicly owned railway system
Consistently voted against measures to prevent climate change

Consistently voted against higher taxes on banks
Consistently voted for more restrictive regulation of trade union activity
Consistently voted for reducing capital gains tax
Voted against allowing terminally ill people to be given assistance to end their life
Voted for reforming the NHS so GPs buy services on behalf of their patients
Generally voted against more powers for local councils
Generally voted against a more proportional system for electing MPs
Consistently voted for reducing central government funding of local government
Generally voted against a right to remain for EU nationals already in living in the UK
Voted against investigations into the Iraq war
Consistently voted for a stricter asylum system
Consistently voted for requiring the mass retention of information about communications
Consistently voted for mass surveillance of people’s communications and activities

True to an extent, but I suspect most of those instances have been where Tugendhat was merely following the official party line as directed by the Tory Whips' Office. I suspect the likes of Kenneth Clarke and Sarah Wollaston have very similar records re their parliamentary voting records.

All of these Tories joined the Tories knowing exactly what the Tories are like. Remember this every time you are prepared to cut a Tory some slack. Then don't.
