1 year service - 4 weeks of square-bashing so the kids learn how to look smart and march in step. 48 weeks building walls of sandbags on river banks in the pissing rain. Still, it'll keep them out of the unemployment figures for a year.

So, given the choice of a year whitewashing coal, or a weekend here and there doing some random things, who is going to pick option one?

This is entirely aimed at paranoid old dears terrified that the kids sitting on benches down the precinct are planning to mug them.

And if they are planning a mugging, they've now been trained to kill with their bare hands.

Would you say that Sunak's National Service guff has handed a massive incentive (as if one were needed) to millions of 19-25 year olds to go out and vote the Tories out?

Cleverly's already started on the morning media round. Apparently there won't be any sanctions for anyone who refuses to take part in this "compulsory" scheme.

Another thought, where's all the accommodation for all these 1000s of conscripts, let alone the NCOs to train them?

They've really not thought about this.
Split the intake into groups: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Snorlax and Ravenclaw.
Invent flying broomsticks.

Has Rishi said if his two daughters will be doing National Service in a few years then? Or will they be dodging it on some human equivalent of a tax loophole? Not that it's happening but they would if it did.
