The fact that only 22% of Prevent referrals for the year 2020-21 concerned Islamism suggests a loss of focus and failure to identify warning signs. This misalignment has been partly driven by a sharp uptick of ‘Mixed, Unclear, or Unstable’ referrals, which constituted over half of Prevent referrals for the year 2020-21. Mental health and neurodevelopmental issues, as well as personal and domestic difficulties are often factors in such referrals.

Oh. If you take these out, then Islamic extremism is up to nearly half. That doesn't seem like a particularly low number for what's essentially an early intervention tool. More alarming stuff would get phoned straight in to the Police, which seems to be happening given their casework. Prevent isn't the same thing as counter terrorist policing.

I get that we use the word "terrorism" for ideological stuff, but surely people without ideology can be dangerous too. A teacher BTL on the Guardian said he had Prevent training, and they met regularly with safeguarding people. I don't know where the referrals go from here, but I assume they get referred to the most appropriate place. Why is this a problem?

The problem is the Home Secretary is Suella Braverman, a person who seems to have one less brain cell than someone who has had their brain fully removed.

Seemingly, this report has gained little traction today which is hardly surprising given Vlod's visit and it dominating the new agenda.

However, it stinks.

It stinks of Braverman demanding exactly the report she wanted, authored by William Shawcross in whom few at the sharp end had much confidence, if any at all.

The gist is that she wants a clampdown on Muslims - including Palestinian activists - rather than the increasingly and rabidly violent right. No professional in their right mind would accept what might be seen as political interference and her doing her transparent best to shore up the base.

After all, that's what the Sixpence Sixthwit is there for.

She knows that the more rabid types particularly don’t like Muslims, with the added bonus that they often have brown skin. So easy target for her and it lets lovely people such as Andrew Tate clones carry on radicalising kids.

It’s just the cluelessness of it I can’t fathom out. She can be as callous and mean-spirited as she likes, and use as much dehumanising language as she likes. But the moment a genuine far-right populist got in she’d still be seen in exactly the same light as the refugees she loathes.

It's been remarked that Thatcher did a lot to undermine the NF by appropriating their language. Now we've a Conservative party that is basically UKIP, which in turn replaced the BNP. Each time a slightly smarter suit, with the rough edges shaved off a bit more.

The sad fact is that the 2016 referendum caused 3 things to hit home:

1. There are a lot of bigoted wankers out there.
2. Their votes are counted the same as everyone else.
3. You are in harm's way if you oppose them, or don't pander to them enough.

The news media love it, because they're guided by controversy. Whatever gets the watercooler moment, the secondary views, dominates the agenda, fills the space, or whatever you call it. Also remember that almost all newspaper journalists are massive edgelording wankers. Pushing the envelope, seeing what you can get away with before the lawyers step in, it's their bread and butter. Also, they're thinking that whatever the dangers of the far right, they're not directly at risk.

Something I've often thought - every so often a populist far-right party pops up. Each time they're a bit less extreme and they get a lot more support. In the seventies the National Front got votes but no wins. 25 years later the BNP won council and European elections. After that UKIP were successful in Europe. Now it's the Tories. The rhetoric is the same, the success has been greater.
