I agree about some of his housing stuff. Among other things, he's taken heed of a Twitter account that flags up unacceptable conditions in social housing and has taken the radical step of phoning the providers up himself. "Hi, it's the Secretary of State here, is this stuff true about Mr X's flat true? Well, that's not on" probably goes a long way". I think doing that is generally underrated, especially in a sector with lots of substandard providers.

He's not after a job, he knows Sunak won't win, he's putting the "I told you so" quote out there to refer back to when he needs to demonstrate he was on the right side of history.
He's only 54. I can't believe he's prepared to give up yet. If he doesn't get a job right in there this time, big likelihood that he's looking at opposition before he gets another chance.
Exactly, he'll only be 66 in 2034 or, assuming that Labour only win one term, 61 in 2029, he's got plenty of time.

Gove is now reinventing himself as the leader of the one nation tories.

He's finally spotted a leader that he can out-Charisma.
Looks like Gove thinks there may be an opportunity for a "Tory Unity" candidate in the near future, presumably because the pro-Boris and pro-Rishi factions cannot stand one another.

I suspect Labour would be reasonably pleased if faced with a Gove-led Tory party at the next GE. He was always pretty unpopular with the public in the first place, and that was before he attached himself to the increasingly discredited Vote Leave campaign in 2016.

Lots of other juicy attack lines as well - "The man who brought Dominic Cummings into government" being the most obvious, plus of course the whole "We've had enough of experts" nonsense which seems to permeate through much of the present day Tory Party, resulting in the current economic crisis.

Popbitch asks an interesting question:
As Suella Braverman suggests reclassifying cannabis as a Class A drug, which sitting Tory MP (a former minister himself) used to get his cocaine delivered direct to Westminster?

From Popbitch:
Michael Gove is becoming a bit of a fixture on the book launch party scene. He was at his shadow counterpart Lisa Nandy's launch event on Tuesday, telling her he was going to buy three copies of her book – one for each of his cabinet colleagues who could read (and promised to get the rest of them the audiobook).

Remember the target audience. Homeowners who might be wavering. Not anyone who might be directly affected by this.

Besides, the Caahncil are all lefties (regardless of makeup), and housing associations sound a bit fluffy and hippyish, if not run by Them.

Tory logic. The best way to get lefty HAs to spend money on bringing sub-standard housing up to scratch is to cut their funding.

While voting down an amendment to the Housing Bill which would have required private landlords to bring their properties up to an acceptable minimum standard.

Has anyone noticed just what cunts the Tories are?

To be fair, it is consistent given they think the best way to help the poor is to make them even poorer, and the best way t ok encourage the rich to help is to not regulate them or make them pay much of anything at all. Consistently cunty, but consistent nonetheless.

Tory thinking 101 - money is power. And, to momentarily impersonate and paraphrase Michael Ironside's character Jean Raczack from the seminal sci-fi satire Starship Troopers (much to the despair of Abers), spent money has no value!

Spend money and you can't spend it again. More to the point, it's in someone else's hands. Thus all effort should be spent on making sure ther right people can amass all the money.

Government which created situation where private landlords can do whatever the fuck they like decide that private landlords should not be allowed to do whatever the fuck they like.

Plans to scrap "no-fault" evictions will be unveiled by the government today.

The Renters' (Reform) Bill will be published later - three-and-a-half years after the government was elected with a manifesto promise to stop the practice.

No-fault - or Section 21 - evictions allow landlords to take back possession from tenants without giving a reason...

https://news.sky.com/story/amp/no-fault ... s-12882501

After emphatically rejecting Corbyn's tabled amendments to the previous Housing Bill
Mr Gove said: "Too many renters are living in damp, unsafe, cold homes, powerless to put things right, and with the threat of sudden eviction hanging over them.

"This government is determined to tackle these injustices by offering a new deal to those living in the private rented sector; one with quality, affordability and fairness at its heart."
They're going to introduce measures which they rejected as unnecessary only a few years ago.

I wonder how many people will remember that far back (2017?) and recognise this for the U-turn it undoubtedly is?

Only thing I can think why he pushed this now is so Labour are criticised for more legislation when they’ve already had some.

Otherwise why it’s taken 4 years, then again it’s going be amended to buggery so I have a feeling they won’t get it through.

It should have the votes mind, and I do hope it gets passed or at least picked up by Labour when in Government.
