This happened did it? Perhaps it’s just some people who recognised Hitchens so tried to punk him.
Twice in recent weeks I have been used as cover by obvious shoplifters at Marks and Spencers. The thieves have suddenly fallen into step with me as I have walked out of the store with my legal purchases. The alarm buzzers sound, but shop staff cannot be sure which person has set them off.
Of course, the even simpler explanation is that Hitch has taken to shoplifting and this is him covering his arse by blaming ‘thieves’ 😁

I see the embarrassing BBC attempt to rewrite the history of World War Two ‘World on Fire’ is back for a second series. In this odd drama, British people are rather often portrayed as bigots of one kind or another.
Why, what's embarrassing about it Peter, were you around during WW2, were you serving in an Indian regiment in North African? You just pick up on one incident, in what is a drama, not a history lesson, nothing is being rewritten. You say you are "old school Conservative", I assume that's the McMillan snobbery that was shown up by Atlee, the same old school that was eaten up, and shat out, by the grocer's daughter, and look where that has gotten us to. He's always going on about some bishop who was wrongly accused of abuse, but where's his stance on all the abusing clerics that his precious church has protected, we never hear you Peter, express concern about the real scandals, e.g. rapist policemen, the Post Office/Horizon scandal, tainted blood, PPE fraud.

You finally pissed me off, your just an "educated" Littlejohn, i.e. your not a cunt, your Mr Cunt

Anecdote:
Many years ago I taught a history 'O' level evening class. Mixture of middle aged mums, kids trying again and a 70-year old who had missed out on education.

I made the point, vis-a-vis WW2, that a good portion of the British public were anti-semitic and many thought that Jews were 'getting what they deserved'. (This is attested in many accounts).

Outrage from the youngers! No, never, we were never like that.

Old bloke - "Yes we were, I remember it well..."

The power of witness testament. I bet I know which side Hitch would take.

Bring back hanging but we can’t because of lefty police and judges who are responsible for wrongful convictions. Not like the good old days when Henry Fonda and other white male property owners were on juries. And so what if innocent people are hanged? Innocent citizens died when Blair bombed patriotic Christian Serbians. Lots of facts that Hitchens admits might not be of any use to his argument. And a bizarre rant at Governor Clinton ordering a mentally deficient prisoner to be fried because the future POTUS was a liberal lefty. Peter has lately just become a Private Eye spoof of himself. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/arti ... t-job.html

Little Peter has figured it all out. If people were sensible we'd not have all these wars! And if we aren't sensible, we might have our own version of Trump over here, maybe in a position of power!

He's also had a letter come through the door, from the tax office! It tells him how his tax gets spent. He thinks it would be jolly nice if everyone got a special letter like this, addressed to them.

Now we go through the square window to a big factory where we'll see how biscuits are made.

Drugs are bad. They're bad because they're illegal. They wouldn't be illegal if they weren't bad.

Meanwhile, in TV critic mode, he spots the problem with all crime dramas - crime should not be happening in the first place. Hence, bad.

Given his tiresome, puritan stance and when it would have first come about, I can only assume Peter either had a bad experience in his youth that he of course won’t admit to, and/or is simply still annoyed that he isn’t one of the cool kids, isn’t a much loved and respected writer and thinker and never will be, and loathes the fact that many figures who are have been quite open with their use of drugs, issues with depression and so on.

Seen through the lens of ongoing resentment and jealousy, everything he says makes much more sense.

Nobody knew any more who was responsible for what. If you asked the District Council to fix a pothole or exterminate some rats, they referred you to the County Council, and vice versa.

A system the Tories lumbered us with as they feared unitary councils would diminish their local government base. Although Birmingham is a very large unitary council so that point doesn’t even advance Peter’s pitch.

Trying to have a serious argument with Russell Brand is like playing chess with a squirrel.

In a number of debates with Hitchens on drugs, Brand was advocating an austere line of abstinence based recovery. Addiction specialists would take issue with this as simplistic and irresponsible. But a view you’d have expected Hitchens to applaud as he believes the same thing (but by banging people up rather than Brand’s approach of support). But Hitchens doesn’t listen to what his adversaries are saying having made up his mind Brand was a frivolous libertine, may as well play chess with a squirrel.

Peter ponders justice, and what if someone convicted of an awful crime turns out to be innocent? Especially if they're locked up in one of those real prisons without any plasma TV sets. It's a valid point, but he presents it as if he's the first person ever to consider it. It also is at odds with the general media attitude towards criminals, of "nothing's too bad for them (and while we're at it, let's lock up the appeal lawyers too)".

One of his main planks is that a killer doesn't look like a killer, and how can someone in a caring profession be cruel? Nobody tell him about Beverly Allitt, Harold Shipman, H.H.Holmes etc.

Then a pop at the king for making a speech that wasn't pre-approved by him.
