His brainfart today:

25 years ago, Major was quoted as describing Redwood as “a fucking lunatic.” John R has since shown little self reflection to raise his game.

He is, even allowing for him being an old Tory wanker, quite astonishingly stupid.

Redwood’s supporters in the leadership election didn’t exactly dispel the impression he was mad.

There’s a famous photo of them, probably easy to find. Tony Marlow and Teresa Gorman were among them, looking radiant.

Hard to look more like a particularly mad bunch of golf club club bores.

Considering how unpopular Major was in 1995 it's amazing that the Tories couldn't find someone half way appealing to challenge John Major.

Like Michael Foot earlier, there was nobody else who could have done better with the split party.

Hestletine and Clarke probably had the most cross party appeal but were impossible because “Europe”.

One of the other MPs may be John Wilkinson.

Arguably the Tories would have done better in 1997 going with a right winger. Portillo got as far as installing extra phone lines but didn’t run. Major cracked a good joke about privatised BT being very efficient.
