Meanwhile In Brazil...

...the Presidential election is taking place tomorrow (2nd October), or at least its first round, and former president, left-winger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva aka 'Lula' appears to be on course to at least top the 1st round poll and isn't far off surpassing the 50% +1 mark for being declared the victor without a second round of voting.
Naturally, current incumbent Bolsonaro is already taking notes from his BFF Tr*mp. The worrying difference is that unlike Cheeto Jesus, Bolsonaro might actually have his country's military get behind him.

The best case scenario is for Lula to win by a margin of more than 10% in the first round.

It is looking very much like Bolsonaro has lost, albeit by a fairly narrow margin. Lula currently leading by 1.6% with 99.0% of districts counted.
Thank Christ for that.

Lula now ahead by nearly two million votes, with less than a million left to count.
However..............there are reportedly an eye-watering 5.6M null/invalid votes. Easy to see Bolsonaro weaponising that in the coming days to challenge the legitimacy of the outcome

Probably mostly for Lula , usually the case in any election.

Biden has congratulated Lula. on his victory hopefully it might make it harder for Bolsanaro to overturn the election.

Surprisingly, Bolsonaro won in the major urban areas. Has he been cutting income taxes or let deregulation rip through financial services? He’s a traditional free market conservative on economics rather than a populist nationalist.

Given the interviews I've seen with Trump-worshipping Bolsonaro voters who've said that it's a fix if their man loses, the next few days could be tense.

I see Steve Bannon is already ranting on about the Brazil election being stolen from Bolsonaro. An early taste of what we can expect from much of the GOP next week if certain key midterm races go against them.

They don't fuck about South of the border. I suspect Bolsanaro is going quietly because he knows the risk of not doing so. Unlike Trump who was insulated from whatever he encouraged his mob to do.

I'm pleasantly surprised by Bolsonaro there.

I do love how Lula basically won by reaching out and the far left comes up with a take that is totally the opposite.
It’s probably why even if Labour had won in 17 or 19 the party would have collapsed within months, but like what you are seeing now on the other side. Though would Corbyn have resigned, probably not.

Lula's election was ratified yesterday. Bolsonaro's supporters are not happy.

Looks like they got off lightly, the Policia Militar are not known for being shrinking violets.

Probably hoped the military and police would swap sides.
I think it’s been helped by the result being close ironically and also the fact that Bolosarno seems to be rotting quite literally at the moment.

Lula was inaugurated on New Years Day, Bolsonaro fled the country the day before. His supporters are still pissed and have stormed the Presidential palace and Congress.
To be fair the news here is actually going further than the US news and calling them terrorists.

Trumpism shifted further south.
I guess there's an inevitability of this sort of copy-cat thing.
How long before the Brazilian cops start shooting live rounds?

Bannon is hailing them...
