One of the journalists (BBC or Sky) asked Johnson specifically if mask wearing would be mandatory, all he said was repeat that it would "tightened up" in shops and public transport". No mention of how or by whom. Also no mention of hospitality or any other indoor space.

So no action has in fact been announced so far but Sajid is going to announce something "in a day or two".

The areas concerned by the obligation to wear a mask are as follows:

• markets whatever their nature, flea markets, open-air or covered sales;
  
  in public gatherings, whatever their cultural, sporting or festive nature;
  
  near train stations, stations or bus stops, within a radius of 50 meters;
  
  on the outskirts of shopping centers, during periods of high footfall and crowding
  
  
  around educational establishments within a perimeter of 50 meters;
  
  near buildings and places of worship within a perimeter of 50 meters
  
  in the queues outside.
  
  At Mont-Saint-Michel intramural from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The obligation to wear a mask does not apply to:
• people with disabilities who have a medical certificate justifying this situation;
• people practicing physical activity (cycling, running, etc.). However, they must have a mask which must be worn at the end of the activity;
• drivers of motorized two-wheeled vehicles, who are required to wear a helmet.

Whilst I'm pleased that the government is planning to make face coverings mandatory in supermarkets again, ultimately I can chose if I enter a supermarket or not however I currently work in a school and I have no choice but to turn up every day even though masks are virtually non-existent in schools.

Last December we had loads of kids sent home as a result of positive Covid tests and there is every chance that this year will be very similar. Imposing masks in schools now would be a good way of ensuring that kids will not pick up the virus between now and Christmas and ten pass it on to elderly relatives at Christmas.

Last night the local heritage railway updated its website to not only announce the cancellation of the last "Santa" train of the day but also to announce that masks were mandatory in all areas except where eating/drinking. Were they being proactive or had they had notification?

To be fair, I think I understand why Javid said mandatory masking won't come into force until Tuesday. For something to be mandatory in law, you've got to have the law in the first place. This is because otherwise you'll get people who aren't wearing one claim that they're not breaking any law when confronted.

New laws have to go through Parliament. As this is the weekend, they won't sit until tomorrow, and although the law will sail through, realistically, it isn't going to be on the statute books until Tuesday.

Of course, what he should have said is something along the lines of "It'll become law on Tuesday, but in the meantime, we recommend in the strongest possible terms that you wear masks in the places you'll be required to".
