The old city had been put on notice long before by the Office of Fair Trading, in a case that started late under the Callaghan Government. You didn't have to be a barrow boy to think the rules were indefensible. I would think the old establishment was happy with Big Bang, particularly if they were thinking of retirement anyway and suddenly had Americans offering generous sums for their small brokerages.

The most absurd thing about all this is that if you apply any objectivity to it, of *course* Coutts - a bank more exclusive than the ‘people Boris Johnson hasn’t lied to’ club - are going to revoke Farage’s account once his mortgage is paid off. Chances are he started it back when he was a well paid city leech. Now though, when he’s not pulling some shitty right-wing grift or sucking up to Putin or Trump, he wanks for pennies on Fiverr. A guy who has ‘2 shout outs for the price of 1’ as one of his primary sources of income is not going to be as appealing as a customer as, say, Chuck Windsor.

It ain't personal, it's just business.

Coppola, Godfather, I'm here all week....
She did used to make it plain she hasn’t directed Apocalypse Now.

Maybe this doesn’t quite fit with Coutts image

You know, this is what galls me most about Farage's latest publicity stunt (for such it is). The way that right-wing establishment figures, from Sunak to Braverman, and Neil, have all jumped up to stand shoulder-to -shoulder with this hateful con merchant's exercise in faux outrage. There are also certain media professionals (step forward Tom Swarbrick) metaphorically clutching their pearls and pronouncing the closure of Farage's bank account hyperbolically as "terrifying".

It is frankly, fucking shameful. Thank Dawkins for people like Coppola and Oborne.

As said elsewhere, I suspect that come the inevitable Tory leadership scrap, how much one sucked up to Fargle will be of crucial importance to the party membership. He may not be a Tory, but they sure do love him. .

As expected, rules are changed for the man with power but no responsibility.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-66258137

Under the new rules, banks will have to give a notice period of 90 days before closing an account, giving account holders more time to appeal against the decision.

They will also have to spell out why they want to close an account, making it easier for customers to challenge closures.

90 days?! Somebody could do a shit load of damage to the bank's reputation in that time.

He's still got a fairly substantial support base, albeit complete morons, and despite his pathetic record as a politician he's still considered the architect of Brexit, obviously a pretty earth shattering event, so keeping him onside, even if it's just from a distance, is politically wise by the Tories. He is a washed up loser but a cult is a cult and vaguely endorsing him means his followers will lend their vote to the Tories.

In reality, they all bat for the same team.

Witness Farage pulling his candidates toward the end of the last election.
