True turning points, like disasters, are multi-causal.
The excellent Past, Present, Future podcast has recently done a series on counterfactuals. It's interesting more for discussion around them than the actual idea of 'if not X, then Y'.

That is, the hinges are not really hinges, more inflection points. So they're a strange device, in a way, with their best feature being their provocative nature.

This BBC two part docu, available on the Iplayer, is rather useful in documenting how and why the issue of asylum and immigration became such a toxic and damaging issue in UK (substantially English) politics, exploited by Farage, Immigration Watch UK, and the Tory tabloids.

It’s worth disregarding the slightly provocative title - “Immigration - How British Politics Failed”, as it is broadly objective in its approach. Farage is even shown admitting that he (dishonestly) leveraged immigration, particularly after EU expansion, to further his xenophobic agenda.

interspersed with many clips of “I’m not racist, but …” dimwitted vox pop interviews, it is horrible in many ways, but needs to be viewed by anyone of a progressive mindset.
