If they do knock at your door, ask them if they believe that every word of the Bible is the unchallengeable word of God, or if its meanings have been lost somewhat over the years due to the many translations it has undergone. Then, when they say that every word has to be taken at face value, ask them to explain Luke 10:7

I looked it up...

From the KJV

Luke 10:7 wrote:And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
One assumes the " Go not from house to house" bit might need a bit of clarification from the Jojoba's Witlesses.

There must be lots of occasions in the New Twstament where believers are exhorted to go out and convert the heathen.

I spotted the typo, and left it. It seems to improve the post.

Yup.

Ask a True Tory Christian what they feel about the Sermon on the Mount.
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
I post this not as a Christian (heaven forbid) but as an example of how true wisdom can be found in religious teaching. None of this needs a god, it just needs a human with a heart.

My sleep patterns have been shot to cock, these last few nights, so I have been tightly wired in to the World Service.

Fancy an organised religion? You could do a lot worse that get yourself some Sikhism. Equality runs through it like a stick of rock, the food's great, and the music is better still.

Plus, although the Sikh religion officially discourages the consumption of alcohol, virtually every sikh I've known adopts a *ahem* highly flexible attitude to this. In other words, they are total piss-heads. I attended a Sikh wedding reception in a very large community hall, where in addition to the free bar, every table had a bottle of whisky, a bottle of vodka, and a bottle of rum on it.

Pish-tastic !

Once asked a Sikh colleague what wine he would drink with curry.
"Whisky" he said.

What about an aperitif?
"Whisky. Always whisky."

He used to bring bottles of 'orange juice' in to school, which a year 7 kid nicked one day, and had to be sent to have his stomach pumped.

Another one poured his 'water' into the fish tank and all the fish died, smiling.

Similar experience here. One of my friends had a Hindu background, but he was marrying a Sikh woman. He had no qualms in going for a Sikh wedding as he "they are much quicker and [he] didn't fancy sitting round a fire for hours on end".

The ceremony included several bottles of spirits, which were replenished as they were consumed. There were a few mixers at the start, but they were not replaced.

My brain still hurts even thinking of it.

It is often said that new converts to a religion are some of its most enthusiastic. Reading through these observations, I am rather looking forward to getting stuck in.

I do wonder though, whether my new chums will let me wear my turban Mujahideen-Style. (In all likelihood, they'll be too pissed to notice.)

Likewise (at the risk of that white bourgeois parody, 'my ethnic friend was X, such an interesting chap') I knew a guy who was devoutly Muslim, didn't drink, but slept with every single woman who looked at him with approval (which was many, as he was rather handsome).

Rick Stein is on the telly at present going around India.
I caught about 5 minutes of him at the Golden Tample, and got a brief glimpse of the scale of the kitchens.

The video included here goes into far more detail.

I think those of us who grew up in the west are still amazed by the sight masses of people turning out for pilgrimmages like this, and the Haj.

When it comes to religion, I feel the old Alchemist's saying "The dosage is the poison" applies.

You can find fine sentiments in the scriptures of almost every religion.
You can also find some pretty dark stuff in many of them (The rest don't record their atrocities).

There are many fine people following Buddhist, Christian, Jew, Muslim, Sikh, Zoroastrian principles..
The types whose reading of their faith aligns with the principles of humanity.

There are others who use "the club" as a smokescreen for a darker agenda.
Govey the Churck of England militant is but one example.

And then there are the few who believe in the one true way, with forcible conversion and unbelievers worthy only of banishment, servitude or extermination.

History tends to record only the instances when faith and state intertwined to create massive tragedies.
God kings, priest kings, inquisitions, holy wars, and national level pogroms.

Piers Corbyn and his merry band of middle-class anarchists has been out again.

This time they built a gallows on Parliament Square, and hanged 'Boris Johnson'. A fucking gallows.

In this week...

Whilst the police stood by and let them.

I think these people have abdicated all rights to be treated with such tolerance. Or to continue to breathe free air.

There was an anti vaxxer protest outside my wife's school last week (NHS staff were about to commence vaccinations for 11 - 15 year olds in the school). A couple of fuckwits handed out leaflets to the kids as they walked to the school gate whilst yelling at them that "you're going to die today" and you're walking into the gas chamber".
