In the 1980s we were told "Political Correctness was killing comedy" because "jokes were banned" by those right-on Lefty kill joys at the BBC and Channel 4..
To be clear, the jokes they were talking about were ablest, homophobic, racist and sexist and they weren't banned, they were replaced on telly by more popular comedians.
Leading the charge then were Jim Davidson and Bernard Manning - today the baton has passed to Maureen Lipman.

When your stock in trade goes out of fashion you have two choices. If you're genuinely talented you can evolve into something else (for example Julie Walters - from playing downtrodden working-class housewives to Hollywood star). I thought at the time that she'd made a bit of a fuss over nothing, and you could see it as a tribute to him rather than an attack on her.

Well, let's look at what she's complaining about. Helen Mirren playing a role that would be suitable for her.

She didn't complain about Daniel Craig in Defiance or Munich. Or Anatol Yusef (Cypriot) as Meyer Lansky in Boardwalk Empire. Or Ian McKellen in the X-Men films. Or, just to show it's not just the lads, Ellie Kendrick as Anne Frank or Susan Lynch as Rebecca in Ivanhoe.

A cynical take is that this is just sour grapes for someone who despite her best efforts will be most remembered by the public as "her off the 80s BT adverts".
