Meanwhile in Canada

Haven't been familiar with many Canadian politicians up until now. Because of the Trump induced crisis and also we of course know the new PM Mark Carney.
The Brexit headbangers will be livid despite saving the economy from their stupidity in 2016. Whether this competent technocrat has the corresponding political street smarts to fend off his right wing opponent Pierre Poilievre I don't know. I understand like so many on the British right, he's busy rewriting his history of pro Trump echoes.
The foreign secretary Melanie Joly also comes across as an impressive figure.

Polls seem all over the place at the moment but it’s not just one pollster now leaning that way, Carney does seem to have the best figures.
According to the BBC this could be a big problem for Starmer, though having read it I couldn’t quite spot the problem or how it would be that different to Trudeau.

Faisal Islam's take is that Carney will want Starmer to show his cards on Trump instead of diplomatic tilting.

Carney isn't yet an MP but this kind anointing of a PM before a GE isn't unusual. US speke your branes on social media believe this to be evidence of a coup by the WEF.

Even more tariffs on Canada, as a response to the export tax that Doug Ford placed on Ontario electricity.
My impression from Bluesky is that Ford isn't regarded as a heavyweight of policy and statecraft. I wonder if he's got a bit high on his own supply here. Happy for Trump to take the hit from it though.

However mad Mr Ford gets, Trump can outmad him in both senses

Mark Carney has called a snap general election on 28 April, saying that he wants and requires a clear mandate to “deal with” Donald Trump.
Understandable, since his party governs as a minority government, but I’d say he stands a fair chance of getting his mandate.

Either that, or cynically opportunistic. And why not? It's a dirty business, politics.

Canada: "Come at me Bro - elbows up!"
Septics: "Texas alone could take you".
Texans, after a mild chill:

Interesting take from the Mail.
Spiteful Canadians are boycotting huge American industry and it will cost US $2 billion and 14k jobs

And there was me thinking that it was actually America that triggered the trade war!

Where did I read that the Lone Star in the Texan flag is a visitor review...?

This seems a bit over the top- Doug Ford won easily by running hard against Trump. But quite the turnaround.

Good work, Canada. Also: credit to Trudeau - he left at exactly the right time, and his actions in his lame duck period against Trump were spot on.
Looks like Poilievre may even lose his seat. Staggering turnaround.
(Also, I hope it’s being noted in London that a strong anti-twat performance wins votes and wins big.)

Canada’s Carney secures historic election win and says 'Trump will never break us'
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cr5d13e4r2rt
Carney played a blinder there, letting Trump do the campaigning for him.

Haven't heard Trump directly slag off Carney, maybe the stories about his US bond alliance are true. Allegedly Carney pulled Japan, UK and the EU together to threaten to sell off its US bond holdings which would likely result in the Dollar's collapse. I doubt Trump has folded on his tariff war because he went to economics class.

Trump didn't need to say a word about Carney. All that 51st State bollocks concentrated Canadian's minds. Then he endorsed the leader of the Canadian Tories. Job done.

Poliviere has lost his seat apparently.

Poilievre has indeed lost his seat. This, from a position of a whopping majority predicted just 3 months ago.
Amazing.

It is quite remarkable, the way that Canada's election result was virtually entirely a consequence of the deranged rantings of the president of the USA.
Canadians appear to have voted, unambiguously, for the guy (Carney) best able to stand up to Trump and defend Canada from his malign ambitions. Most Canucks are appalled at the idea of Canada becoming some sort of 51st state of the USA, especially if it means swearing fealty to a bright orange crook with ambitions to remain president in perpetuity.
Let's hear it for the Canucks !

I've been calling him Poliviere for years. It's Polievre. Apol.
