If I am remembering aright, Carl von Clausewitz in his much regarded work Vom Kriege [On War] advocated that, in order to increase the supply of young men for the army all men should marry at least three times, each wife sequentially producing four or so offspring and then being replaced by a younger, fecund, replacement. State pensions for the discards, lots of fodder for the muskets and cannon...
