I did in fact come very close to writing "fire appliances" (which two of my relatives would expect me to have used - one serving, one retired) but thought I'd get labelled even more of a nerd...

I assume the practical difference (precise terminology aside) is that an appliance carries a water supply, while a mobile pumb has to go hunting for a hydrant before it can start squirting.
