It looks like all Johnson's mates in the media have been out in force trying to rubbish the standards committee. Andrew Pierce tweeted along the lines of hasn't Boris suffered enough already without punishing him further. Which is a fairly pathetic argument given that Johnson has hardly suffered at all. He will get a nice little pay off when he finally resigns, he will probably be back at the Telegraph with in a month and he has got at least one book already to publish as soon as he leaves Number 10. So unlike most people in the country he won't be worrying too much about the cost of living crisis or rising energy bills.

It's difficult not to appear overly dramatic but this lot have pushed so many boundaries that the comparisons with fascism are impossible to ignore. Now we're at the stage of the noble leader being betrayed by the dark forces of the Establishment; echoes of the German stab in the back theory.

They're certainly looking to take at least one step closer towards it. "Boiling frog" springs to mind...

I think come September Raab will be out of a job, he is currently backing Rishi and I suspect that there is plenty of bad blood between Raab and Truss because she replaced Raab as Foreign Secretary.

What we really need is control over House of Lords selection.

Few or none.
If any, then approved by a broad committee.

Yes. Should not be in the gift of the Prime Minister - of any stripe.

Should also be able to show that they bring some necessary experience or expertise - as in the original Blair plan.

Actual Chancellor of the Exchequer here. Rachel Reeves quoting figures that suggest the UK has the highest inflation in the G7 is helping Putin.

Jessop is a Tufton Street cultist and hardly a heavyweight economist source.

Jessop's often surprisingly good, in fairness to him. For instance, he called out Sunak's "debt interest is exploding". But I really don't get him here. Reeves didn't mention Europe. She mentioned the G7, though 4 of its members are in W Europe..

Just another Tory doing what Tories do

A Tory MP who received a large donation from a Covid-19 testing company has denied allegations he helped the firm secure a £500milion Government contract.

Liam Fox, MP for North Somerset, received a £20,000 donation earlier this year from testing company SureScreen.

According to an email seen by Sky News, dated June 22, 2020, Dr Fox emailed then Health Secretary Matt Hancock to say the company had “performed extremely well in internationally conducted trials” before proceeding to ask if Public Health England would consider the company.

SureScreen Diagnostics would later be awarded a £500 million testing contract by the Department of Health and Social Care...
