I think Macron will be all right, but I'm a bit worried that FN supporters don't care about Putin. I think Macron's got to much more for the economic horseshit that these nationalists talk. Unfortunately, you can get along way in politics by saying "neoliberalism" in a serious voice.

Le Pen seems to have got her surge from Zemmour, I'm relatively happy with these results, when I temporarily overlook how fucking dire the situation is.

Melenchon has done well. Surely, he and his major supporters will have to come out strongly against Le Pen this time, when the result is in more doubt? To be fair to Fillon, he did that immediately last time.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the far-left candidate, is speaking now. He tells his supporters:

He asks his supporters not to vote for Marine Le Pen:

We know who we will never vote for. We cannot give a vote to Mme Le Pen.

He has, but he hasn't endorsed Macron.

The far right by contrast don't fuck about with Delphic wordplay.

I wish that I hadn't glossed over a reasonably authoritative grab earlier suggesting that Mélonchon's tribe are fairly evenly split between sanity and that fashy lady with the funny beak.

Seriously. Looking at the way the départements break, it is clear that French politics are set for a rocky ride. The south and the north east are, in some cases, overwhelmingly for la plume de mon honte. One, an area blessed with untold riches and an abundance of natural advantages, the other, something resembling a drive along the A50 via Stoke, just with better food if you can afford it. Yet, areas like Haut-Rhin with Mulhouse, a burger van of a town, was on a knife edge. A hundred votes either way would have been symbolic.

And then the capital, with its truckload of Mélonchon voters in the north-east of the city and a strong signal to be made that Paris is only really working for the Haussmann-dwelling few. It is hard to see a single one of them thinking that their baguette is going to be better buttered by the FN.

Moreover, with just about every vote tallied, I can't see a single département where Le Pen polls better than the combined Macron / Jez vote. And therein lies the challenge. Jezzers are a troublesome and congenitally worrying lot.
