I've dealt with them, and they come from a far wider background than you'd imagine.

I think it’s a bumbling idiot ruse too far, because it’s too implausible for an everyday object. Your elderly nan not knowing how to work a computer is one thing. A middle-aged ‘executive’ (for want of a better descriptor) who can’t work the tool he uses every single day and has done for decades just isn’t swallowable. It’s blatantly a stalling tactic while he tries to figure out how he can delete stuff without it being obvious he’s deleted stuff. Which he can’t do, because for that he really *isn’t* techy enough and he never thought far enough ahead to consider he’d ever be caught.
