A world-beating powerhouse of scientific research...

British scientists and academic researchers have been dealt a blow after 115 grants from a flagship EU research programme were terminated because of the continuing Brexit row over Northern Ireland.

One academic said he was “relieved” to be exiting the country and feared the UK was going down a “dark path” like Germany in the 1930s.

One hundred and fifty grants were approved for British applicants after the then Brexit minister, David Frost, successfully negotiated associate membership of the £80bn Horizon Europe programme but most will now be cancelled.

Beneficiaries in the UK were told by the European Research Council (ERC) that unless associate membership had been approved by 29 June, the grants would not be available unless the researchers moved their work to a European institution.

Ratification of the membership has been in abeyance because the UK has not implemented the Brexit trading arrangements agreed under the Northern Ireland protocol.

With the deadline passed, it has emerged that just 18 of the 150 academics will take up the grants but must move to an EU institution to get the funds...

Johnson got Brexit done, apparently.

Get with the programme, dude! He "broke the deadlock", that's the new line.

Northern Ireland minister Conor Burns gave his “ongoing and full support” to Boris Johnson from the floor of the House of Commons.
Well, at least the heavyweights are still behind Johnson.

Only a heavyweight in the literal sense, but Frost has joined the bandwagon.

Sheryll Murray was one of the MPs who turned up for Johnson's resignation.

Expect stickier carpets and tables. I do believe he whined about having to pay staff more, didn't he?

Martin believed Brexit would open up a dynamic global labour market of talent (workers from countries far more desperate than Bulgaria prepared to work harder for less money).

More likely that he thought people would be so skint they'd be forced to drink in his slophouses and so desperate for a jiob they'd work there.

The tabloids are losing their shit today because Spain is bringing in rules which will mean British tourists have the ability to spend £85 a day if the wish to enter the country. Of course this is seen by the tabloids as revenge for Brexit but I'm pretty sure Australia has operated a similar system for years. Most of the people complaining woud be more than happy if the British authorities insisted that all people entering the country had the means to support themselves while over here.

Back in the noughties when I went to Australia for several months on a WHV part of the condition for entry on he visa was to demonstrate that you are entering the country with at least AU$5000 on you (e.g. Bank account statement) so you could demonstrate that you had funds to sustain yourself while looking for work - though I was never asked for this on entry and anecdotally this rarely seems to be enforced. When I went back out as a holidaymaker in 2018 all I can recall is that you needed to have proof of a return ticket or funds otherwise to be able to leave the country.

As for Spain, is this £85 a day rule specifically applying to visitors entering on British passports, or does it apply to large swathes of countries outside of Schengen/EU/EEA? If it's the latter, then they have no right to complain.

According to

https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/t ... e-country/

it's anyone entering from a Third Country.
