What a waste of time and energy.
The Canadian government decided to react with 25% tariffs on US goods with a total value of 155 billion Canadian dollars (about 102.8 billion euro). In addition, energy imported from the US, including oil, natural gas, and electricity, will be taxed at a 10% rate.
President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on X that she had instructed her economy minister to implement new tariffs to protect the country’s interests. Sheinbaum also rejected White House accusations that the Mexican government has links to criminal organisations, calling them slander and denying any possibility of US interference on Mexican soil.

I've had a quick skim through the Canadian shit-list, and it includes saucy underwear as well as gloves. That might be a little hasty.

According to the Canadian High commissioner being interviewed on LBC, Trump needed the pretext of an emergency clause to make these tariffs legal under current treaty legislation. Hence the guff about Fentanyl pouring across the border. Can't even find any reference to this drug's manufacture and use in the US being made illegal.

I'm desperately trying to wean myself off doomscrolling but....I can't help notice that almost every one on the right loves Trump's tariff trade war and are willing him on to destroy the economies of Canada, Mexico and the EU. At the same time they're gleefully putting the boot into Britain as an irrelevence. With patriots like these, who needs enemies. It's all thoroughly depressing.

Silver lining. The fuck Trudeau signs up in parts of Canada are being replaced with fuck Trump flags and signs.
Like Brexit, the best warning against electing right wing gobshites is watching your neighbours do it and then absolutely shit the bed.

If you're reaching a conclusion at odds with blind patriotism that's no bad thing. Having nothing to offer may play in the UK's favour while Trump fries bigger fish. He has little interest in cultivating a reliable defence and security partner in Europe but no major beef with the UK either. Perhaps he'll impose tariffs if a Scottish council turns down a planning application for a new golf course.

While I get that there must be a certain amount of head in sand going on in Whitehall, along with ideas that if anyone can act as a safety brake, it's us, coupled to pipe dreams of trade deals and NATO; there has to come a point where the UK government has to decide.
If we go with the USA against the rest of the civilised world, I frankly don't care which party's in power. It won't matter.

So far Trump hasn’t asked anything from the UK to yield to. Not so much head in the sand but hiding behind the dunes while the big beasts slug it out. The whorehouse in Dodge City; all welcome to get your knob sucked if you leave your guns at the door.

What would you like the UK government to do?

Something? Anything?
Express support for the EU and Canada, say that we'll try to convince the USA to change their minds, just not stand there not doing anything.

The seals are already clapping that Trump's extortion is Working and is Unreal and So Winning.
Mexico are apparently sending police/guard to the border cos Daddy Trump waved his big stick.
Because before there were none! ???! Right guys???
And the tariffs are off for a month (but they were supposed to fix XYZ as well and represented a just strike against trade imbalances and)
Uh
So much winning!
And so on.
It's an absolute circus.

Or maybe the Mexican president told him where to shove it, he panicked, and is now trying to save face.

2021. 10,000 troops mentioned there too, curiously enough. Achieved without tariffs, but Big Daddy waves the stick and X explodes because Rational and Critical Thinkers.

A John Redwood/Hannan level brain fart. 'Let's spend millions moving our factories to Britain, that’ll outsmart Trump,' says no vehicle manufacturer anywhere.

Why would any European car manufacturer spend millions moving to the UK to destroy tariff free access to the EU?

Opening seperate plants just for US exports. As if Trump wouldn't then expand the tariffs to the UK.

In any case, Trump would be out of office before the UK plants were up and running.
