Trump is astonishing.

Just a shame he's a total cunt.

I think this is basically the end of the US as we know it. Trump won’t be around long, but Vance will just set up a tech bro autocracy.

I am very glad this morning that Starmer is PM here. Very glad indeed.

Incredibly it appears that Latinos and African - American males voted for Trump in large numbers a decision they may live to regret really quite quickly. As might the people who voted in protest against the Democrats support for Israel who presumably think Trump is going to help Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah eradicate Israel.

Got up for a piss at 3 AM and saw the qriting on the wall. I don't have the words this morning so I'll leave it to Fun Boy Three.

The lunatics have taken over the asylum
The lunatics have taken over the asylum
The lunatics have taken over the asylum, take away my right to choose
The lunatics have taken over the asylum, take away my point of view
The lunatics have taken over the asylum
The lunatics have taken over the asylum, take away my dignity
Take these things away from me
The lunatics have taken over the asylum
The lunatics have taken over the asylum, take away my family
Take away the right to speak
The lunatics have taken over the asylum take away my point of view
Take away my right to choose

The old gag used to be that while the Republicans pander to their base the Democrats think it’s the height of grown up politics to insult theirs. Let the autopsy begin.

I should be immune by now, but I still can’t quite believe he’s won again…We’re gonna get Elon Musk in government aren’t we?

Ok, looking for if not positives then at least glimmers of hope:
1. This is not gong to be a Trump presidency. He’s too far gone to run stuff. They’ll let him have some horrible policies to keep him happy, but Vance, Musk and Thiel etc. will not want to tank the economy with insane tariffs.
2. Similarly, they may be hawks but they are not “let’s just nuke a hurricane” insane/stupid like he is. They want to deregulate business and regulate on stuff like women’s health. Both awful, awful things but domestic horrors - not a path to world war 3.
3. This could and likely will lead to new alliances across the world that may mean we all become less reliant on the US/Russia balance.
4. Putin is 72 and not a well man, and Trump in office alone is not going to fix the Russian economy because he wants to sell gas and oil to Europe. Ukraine falling is not now inevitable, though sadly it is more likely some sort of shitty compromise will happen.
5. Looks like Dems will take the house, so that’s something
6. Netenyahu is facing more and more pressure from within to stop.

That’s all I’ve got. Slim pickings, but better than nothing.

Bright sides?

I saw a video of a bear playing with a balloon this morning.

A reminder that while people suck, at least I have a good boy at home when I need a lift.

That's all I've got.

Despite the news coverage over the last few days, it's worth reminding ourselves that we here in the UK are not actually American and this is all happening in a foreign country which right now seems more foreign than ever. I'm off to get a cup of Twinning's Strong English Breakfast and a bacon sarnie. Have a nice day, as they say over there.

If Trump carries out mass round ups of potential illegals, stormtroopers tend to act first and "but I'm an American citizen who voted for President Trump" will fall on death ears. Trump probably wants to ferment unrest with emergency powers acts to follow.

Vance is dedicated to isolationism and you could argue the US's post WWII international engagement is something of an anolomany in its history. Protectionism and isolationism has always been there beneath the surface on the left and right in US politics.

Optimistic about 3) and the world will regroup as a bulwark against Trump's axis of evil.

Another possible bonus if Trump begins to snub out democracy is leaving his British supporters in disgrace. Even dimwits in Clacton might have second thoughts.

It's infuriating seeing the amount of snarky takes this morning from people who notionally describe themselves as left-wing, usually along the lines of "Trump sucks, but it's always funny seeing the centrist melts crying", that sort of thing.

I just cannot understand the mindset of supposedly being a progressive but also revelling in this sort of result. The two things are diametrically opposed, surely?

We've seen it over here countless times, and they always say it's "funny".

Neither are 'victims of neoliberalism' anywhere near numerous enough to deliver Trump a victory. Have nots don't even vote in large numbers.

Another four years of this clownshow. I have family members living in the USA, and they are just as shocked as I am. The far right has been emboldened by Trump's victory, and the likes of Fox News will be having a field day. No doubt the Democrats will have a major inquest over how they managed to lose a winnable election.

Also: the 2026 midterms. 2 years is long enough to fuck the economy (see: Truss, L) but hopefully not quite long enough to dismantle every institution, check and balance. And it’s a spread that favours dems. Maybe, just maybe they can scrape along until then, win, and then neuter the fuck out of him for another 2 years.
