I'm in two minds about instant punishment. Yes, these bastards need to be hammered but they should also be given equal access to justice as everyone facing trial.

Long sentences aren’t appropriate for these idiots blubbing in the dock if it’s a first offence. Leave them to those at the top of the chain.

What struck me about these rioters, just like the January 6th mob, was the way some of them made it out to be a game, a bit of fun that got out of hand. I'm tempted to say gamer culture strikes again, but with the Jan 6th mob, there were some who went armed and equipped for tying up and killing people, and others who seemed to treat it a bit like a carnival meeting a stage invasion.

I'm also reading The Secret Barrister's book at the moment, and they keep going back to the point that almost everyone thinks - nothing bad will ever happen to me. Time to disabuse a few people of that. This is reality and it hurts.

I’m sure there are at least a couple of episodes where someone disgraces themselves in a significant way and is invited to regain their honour by volunteering to be the first corpse on the pile.

If there had been some I suspect they may have handed him a mild punishment beating for his neo-Nazi and racist views, which could have been very good for his future development as a human being.

Those three got 3 years, 30 months and 20 months respectively. Good.

It's looking like the planned riots tonight are going to be a bit of a damp squib, hopefully. I think they're probably losing their appetite after seeing the repercussions taking place. Fingers crossed.

Apparently Croydon is on their hit list. If they're stupid enough to try and start a racist riot in Croydon they deserve everything they'll get.

Whilst tonight's riots may well prove to be damp squibs they have already caused serious disruption with doctors surgeries and pubs closing early, extra police have been deployed and people who have appeared on the list of targets have suffered a great deal of stress and anxiety.

Yes, I've just seen footage of shop owners and mosques boarding up their doors and windows. Poor people. I really hope the local communities don't get themselves into trouble (and give ammo to the "both sides" argument). It's entirely understandable that they'd want to protect their businesses and their homes but I do think the police have probably got this. That said, if a bunch of pissed up racists find themselves running into some South London gangs then that's their problem.

It's looking ever-more like the days of football violence. The belief that being in a gang makes you invincible, that you're only having a laugh and being picked on, the permanent sense of injustice and now the almost certainty that if it's bound to go off it rarely does.

Sky News are salivating. They'd call it Super Wednesday if they could. I don't know why I even popped my head in.

Just literally thousands of counter protesters and police standing around peacefully having a chat. The worst possible thing that can happen at this point is the counter protesters and/or Muslim communities kicking off, but without provocation that's hopefully very unlikely.
