David Guake has rejoined the Tories but he's a somewhat eccentric figure. Currently writing a convoluted article as to why Labour don't understand basic laws of supply and demand. Because they've complained about Oasis ticket touts.

What a surprise.

You’ll see which ones pivot back over and which ones don’t.

Fucking idiots don't understand markets themselves. Prices are set not only to ration goods but to send signals to suppliers and potential suppliers. There's only one Oasis and only so many venues, so the potential to expand supply to meet demand is practically non-existent. A clearer example of market failure would be difficult to imagine.
It's almost as if the Tory veneration of the market is not really about reverence for its majestic ability to distribute goods and services in an efficient manner, but in its ability to throw up quick-buck opportunities for spivs like them.

So, it’s looking as if the final two is likely to be either Cleverly or Tugendhat (both nominally “moderates”) versus either Jenrick or Badenoch (both unquestionably right-wing cunts).

Andrew Marr thinks Cleverly is the one to watch, mainly because he is a genial sort whom everybody seems to like. Similarly, he thinks Badenoch seems to be too brittle and abrasive (somebody said she could start a fight in a phone box), though quite bright, and is actually actively disliked by many MPs, and in the wider party. Making her leader could be a decision they would swiftly regret - shades of Thick Lizzy Truss.

So it may come down to a choice for the swivel-eyed hordes between Jimmy Dimly and ‘Honest’ Bob Jenrick. If they have any sense (which they demonstrably do not) they’ll pick Jimmy Dimly.

From a Labour point of view, of course, Badenoch as Tory leader would be a gift from the gods.

I remember Sajid Javid going off on one about tickets when he was newly elected.

Reselling football tickets without authorisation has been illegal for 30 years. Everybody recognises reasons why that's sensible. Doesn't seem to be that far out to recognise that reselling concert tickets could be bad too.

It's on the face of it a no-brainer. Nobody likes ticket scalping, it pisses off event attendees, it diverts money from the artistes and promoters, and leads to higher prices in the future.

Thing is, as those of you who have read James O'Brien's various books will know, lobbyists don't give a shit about that. O'Brien thought that there could be no real support for fixed odds betting terminals, but the gambling industry lobbied hard to resist bans. And yes, the "Thank You for Smoking" tactic of framing their argument as supporting everyone's freedom to make a few quid was used. Because you can't argue with freedom, and everyone thinks of themselves as sensible.

Touts are businessmen. The Tories are the party of business. They'll tut about the practice but secretly heartily approve of making money from someone else's blind devotion.

And you can't buck the market.

As PM Truss showed, you can do something that sounds much like it.

Badenoch thinks Lee Anderson was hard done by. I mean, all that he did was say that the liberal mayor of London was under the control of Islamists

What is depressing is that she knows her audience, and that they will swallow this. Over their middle-class breakfasts...

I’m reminded of Ice T (I think) asking Vanilla Ice “You’re from the street? What street are you from? Sesame?”
