Assumed the blood was from a pierced ear drum but it was a passing bullet. He’s one lucky fucker.
Biden claimed this was an unprecedented act of political violence. Don’t think so it’s America, Joe.

Given the proliferation of firearms and nutjobs with easy access to them in the USA, I’m slightly surprised that there hasn’t already been an assassination attempt before now, whether by one of Trump’s nutjob supporters on Biden, or by who knows who on Trump, as we’ve just seen. I agree it’s a pity that Tom Crooks (the would-be assassin) was taken out by the FBI, as it would have been interesting to find out his motivation - was it a mission to save American democracy from “Project 25” ?
Pity he couldn’t have done a better job.

It's good he's a registered Republican. It's good he's a white American. (If he'd been black it would've been civil war, or Chinese American as earlier rumoured then WW3 next year). It's hopefully loosened the valve on the pressure cooker somewhat. But no doubt Trump and his supporters will do mental gymnastics to spin it in a way it that somehow the Democrats are to blame.

A Unibomber or Timothy McVey type libertarian anarchist feels like the most likely political motivation.

Anyway prepare for a week of unhinged opportunistic claims from both sides of the election.
Guns kill lots of people, but they also kill any opportunity of reasoned debate.
It's even over here (and presumably the rest of Europe) where his closest supporters are on manoeuvres.
* LauraK interviews the MP for Clacton, for his opinion on "what he reckons".
* Kate Andrews (Tufton / Spectator):
"American politics has sunk so low into the cesspit of political despair, there will be some who can’t bring themselves to say, today, we are all MAGA". Why would I ever say that?
* Dafties questioning why Keir Starmer wasn't woken to issue an emergency statement at the time of the shooting.
* Calling out politicians for "not thinking and praying hard enough".

Farage made it mostly about himself on Laura K, the rest about how the liberal media are to blame for the toxicity in politics. Oddly enough, he didn't mention Jo Cox, the political leaning of her killer or how he lit the fuse.

It seems that the would-be assassin was a Republican. Motives unknown unless he has left a 'testament' of some sort.
I watched Sky News' coverage live - it was utterly dire. Autocuties can't deal with big events unfolding, and they gave a good ten minutes to an unhinged MAGA to spew bile onto our screens. Bad judgement, no challenge to obvious lies, but Gillian Joseph did apologise that he had used 'bad language' when he swore. She is so fucking weak...

He didn’t even do that. He does appear to have a cunt’s luck. I feel sorry for the poor sod who was behind him and presumably caught a bullet full on.

I'd have hoped that British reporting of American events would have moved beyond leaving the camera running and adding an "aren't they crazy and whacky?" commentary. Seems not.

The big concern is that this will have injected Trump’s “martyrdom factor”, already strong, with fucking steroids.

Yep that fist clenched, bloody face in front of the flag photo's going to be up there with Iwo Jima, the second plane on 9/11 and Neil Armstrong's giant leap. It's perfect, Trump's PR team couldn't have hoped for more.

Or it could be next month’s fish and chip paper. President Ford suffered two assassination attempts and prototype Trump George Wallace was defiant by campaigning for the presidency confined to a wheelchair after being shot. As for Presidents William McKinley and James Garfield, they’re forgotten by history.
