For the record, the Beeb hasn't played GSTQ at BBC One's closedown now for over 24 years, not because of any anti-British bullshit but because when BBC News 24 (as it was then) launched, it simply took up the channel's downtime and thus the channel never officially had a closedown since then. And just wait until they find out that no other BBC TV channel in its history ever played the national anthem at startup or closedown either.

You'd have thought GBeebies would be proud to play Something That Doesn't Exist Save The Head Of An Institution That Shouldn't, wouldn't you? At prime time, so the Silent Majority ™ can put down their knives and forks and stand to attention while their dinners go cold.

The ratings for The National Anthem would be the lowest of a very poor lot.

It's like prayers before council meetings. Partly to remind "that lot" that they're there on sufferance, and partly because it's an endurance test.
