He didn't say they are, he didn't rule it out.

Well, I kind of did. I just made the point that being democratically elected doesn't make you a saint.

Taiwan had martial law up until 1987, and it was pretty brutal. Political opposition got swatted, and it was basically McCarthyism in all but name. The "White Terror" was not by any means pleasant. Taiwan's better these days, and much has been done to make the country genuinely free and democratic. That said, many accusations of corruption bubble along, and the Kuomintang (the main party) has a very long and murky history.

Also, I lent them a fiver and they never paid me back. Ergo, cunts.

Ummm...yes? Running a country like a corporation and cracking down on dissent is indeed something of a cuntish thing to do. Rates quite highly on the cuntometer, yet below "Being Kim Il Sung or one of his descendants".

Life isn't goodies and baddies. Often it's baddies vs baddies, only that some of them are on our side. You do get that, don't you?
In fact Taiwan had an election last year
So by that logic, Johnson was a great guy for at least the first 12 months after December 2019?

I have a mate living in South Korea, and they actually are quite the bunch of cunts. To the point that they have had to be *incredibly* careful what they say about the political situation to avoid being deported, and even before that have had to hide the fact they’re non-binary, hide the fact they are bisexual, hide the fact they have some tattoos etc.

Simply having an election and seeming to be a democracy is no guarantee of anything.

Oh right so by that logic China has the right to take Taiwan after all they're cunts curiosuly you provide limited evidence for this they once had a military dictatorship so have lots of countries are they all cunts then? Also this is getting away from the fact that an icnreasing number of online left-wingers like Folan are fine with Imperialism so long as it's coming from Russia or China.

Point 1: if China took over Taiwan, rather than a seismic switch from a modern, open democracy to an oppressive dictatorship it would probably be much more like for like/very little would change for the man and woman on the street than we might believe. This is not Russia annexing Norway. Or to put it another way, it would be meet the old boss, same as the new boss. Who confusingly was at one time also the old boss.

Point 2: none of that precludes thinking Corbynesque “they can’t do any wrong if they’re commies/anti-USA” sentiments are horse shit and laughably simplistic.

Being aware of 1 doesn’t mean you turn a blind eye to 2 any more than going to a ballot box means you live in a democracy. Your choices annd your freedom might be severely limited even if your country is called the something democratic something of something.

I would argue Hong Kong now actually is a lot more like Russia annexing Norway in terms of how who was in charge behaves vs who took over (and indeed, how who took over have also changed over the years to get worse).

If it were today’s China back when handover happened, it might not have happened at all.
