This is a subject that has brought "miners' strike" levels of division to my family.

Just been reading "Don't Look Back in Anger", a history of the 1990s and up to 9/11. Several politicians contributed to it, among them Major and Blair.

Both made the point that while there's a tendency in politics to never credit the opposition with anything you can claim credit for yourself, the "If you call yourself [party/ideology X], and you quote or credit [person from party/ideology Y], give your head a wobble" thing does nobody any favours. Sometimes people you generally disagree with, do things you agree with. Otherwise every time there was a change of government, there'd be a complete reset.

I think of it this way - I also agree that people refusing the vaccine are being selfish. However, I have different reasons to do so. I want people to have the vaccine so that others don't get ill, so that they themselves don't get ill, and so that people who cannot have it or have not had it yet are safer - and I want that because COVID is a terrible illness and long covid can make people ill in a frightening number of ways for a very, very long time.

Gove wants it because he wants to be able to push Tory ideology - everyone back to work, filling expensive inner-city offices and helping to disguise the fallout of brexit from lack of staff, lack of delivery drivers, damage to the economy and so on. And to help maintain the illusion that the Tories have handled the pandemic well, and also to avoid an NHS collapse. His claim that avoiding the vaccine is selfish is itself stemming from selfishness - once someone is jabbed, they can get on with doing what he wants them to do, even if that might involve a return to an expensive commute and increased exposure on public transport etc. He doesn't care about the person, he cares about the bottom line.

A few questions immediately spring to mind.

Should our "hilarious gaffe" prone Prime Minister be dicking about on two wheels?

While acknowledging that they weren't on a public highway, were they wearing lids?

Just how "high" were the high spirits at this high spirited event?

Those who are up bright and early can enjoy an unmoderated Gove story. Someone is in deep shit at The Mail (the new intern Varah Sine?) as highly rated comments, which I won't directly repeat m'lud, make specific allegations about Gove's sexual and pharmaceutical preferences.

Not so much "back in favour" as "least threat". Johnson knows Gove can't make a decent push for leadership now, as the former Mrs Gove will - entirely against character - be sure to make sure every last bit of bone is cleared out of his wardrobes. So instead, his best bet of retaining a nice ministerial car is keeping Boris in No. 10 for as long as possible.

The cynic in me smells manoeuvers. Gove trying to re-image himself as some sort of "man of the people/ledge" that worked well for Johnson?

On one hand I say, fair enough. His job doesn't involve dealing with driver shortages, Covid, or Afghanistan directly, and he's free from Sarah Vine. Go ahead mate, knock yourself out.

On the other, as above, it does feel a bit like William Hague in his baseball cap. And bear in mind Hague was twenty years younger at that point than Gove is now.

Plus, he must be aware of the various rumours surrounding him with regards to his sexuality and substance abuse, but here we have him in a public arena dancing with a load of young men looking wazzed out of his bonce. Of course, the sexuality thing isn't going to bother most people if he was gay, but if he's wanting to keep it private, this is a damned odd way of doing it.

Perhaps he harbours ambitions to appear on Strictly Come Dancing and he is just putting together an audition tape just in case one of this years contestants is forced to pull out at the last minute.

Or - another dead cat.

I don't often say this about Gove, but I'm willing to take this at face value. Bloke who's split up from his wife goes out, enjoys the sauce a bit more than he remembers and doesn't want to go home.

I think he's fucked on the leadership front by having the wrong job at the wrong time. Javid, Sunak and Truss are the frontrunners in terms of aiming their actions at members..

While at university, I remember being at one of the alternative (read: not shitty chart music of the day) nights at a nightclub, and halfway through the evening a small group of sheepish-looking businessmen wandered in, clearly after a late-night drink. This led to fairly hilarious scenes later of a clearly hammered guy, tie loosened and jacket off, doing the most dad-like of dad dances and clapping his hands along to a track by New Model Army in the midst of a bunch of goths and shoe-gazers
